Anyway - I think my main point is that Gang of Four were far more exciting live, than on record!

I saw the original Gang of Four in New York, and I agree.

Yep Clint has a very cool way of playing. Great sense of when to just hold it down and when to go "expressionist"
Very tasteful musician. Sings too!

Fantastic thread, love so many of the players that have been mentioned. Also deserving of mention are the bassists from A Certain Ratio and The Pop Group (love She Is Beyond Good And Evil). Probably missed it earlier on in the thread but Youth and Paul Raven?

Had the WORST bass tone when I saw him on tour with The Stooges last year. Ungh. All mud and no definition. I know the man can play but it is really sad to be unable to hear what he is doing.

Same goes for Sting when I saw The Police last year. That old tele-pbass sounds like... well, it didn't really sound at all. They kinda fixed the mix halfway through the set but talk about disappointing. I wanted to break into the rock hall of fame just to get his Spector ns2 back for him.

Man, now i'm gonna have to dig up some Shriekback.. haven't listened to them in ages..

i've recently discovered a new bassist i'm quite fond of that i never knew existed before:

Dan Catsis of postpunk/nowave Bristol-based group "Maximum Joy" (1979-1983). He was in Pop Group & Glaxo Babies prior to that. Amazing blend of genres in his bass playing: slappy funk, dubby reggae, with a punkish edge.
