The guy who wrote a song can play it any way he wants.
A band covering a version of a song has a clear road map (a recording) of what to play.
Play it that way or not.

I don't believe that the original Superstition has a bass on it. It's like 4 layers of Clav isn't it?
And the 200 wedding party guests would never know the difference as long as the drummer keeps a solid meter.
I don't know that there is a particular song I see lost when people cover them, but I've seen cover bands where they just get a guitarist to play bass just to make some quick cash.
The "bassist" usually only plays roots and doesn't have any flow or use scales to compensate.

Who cares if someone does not copy the record exactly! To me, there is nothing so boring as hearing a band play "exactly as played by the original artist"
Springsteen's "Born to Run" - The breakdown right before and including the part where he counts the band back in.
Pink Floyd's "Have a Cigar" - I don't know how to explain it but the little run at the end of the instrumental section right before the vocals start.

Well, to me there is nothing more exciting than watching a band that wants to play everything correctly and actually pull it off.

I would expect a tribute band to play note for note but not cover bands. Most cover bands don't make enough money to put in that kind of time
You are an EXTREME minority judging from my experience in watching 1000's of booties shake to 1000's of "incorrect" bass lines.

Any of the 225 songs I play in the cover bands I play with.. I am not there to be 100% accurate, I am there to entertain and inspire drunk people to dance . I learn em and make my own lines up after I get comfortable with the chord changes and feel of the song. Sure there are certain songs I play it pretty close, but weelk after week that gets boring and there is no sheet music in front of me....

Sorry, I'm in a Rush tribute, hopefully ready later this year. There's not going to be many "booties" shaking (unfortunately) and if I don't play it note perfect, the musicians in the audience will be going down the checklist.......wrong........wrong............wrong...............and so on.
I couldn't deal with that.
The Rush fans want to hear the music played correctly and I've seen enough cover bands and some tributes just choke playing Rush.
I do not settle for less than my very best and to play it exact is my main goal. And there's not much wiggle room playing Rush music. The audience of Rushfans don't need to see yet another band play their version of Rush songs. Save that for a cover band then.
But, no matter what I'm learning to play, I want to play it correct. If I want to, once I have the part figured out, I can play around with it, but that is not in front of an audience so when it comes to live, especially playing Rush, I want it spot friggin' on. I want to make sure that the ONE person in the venue watching and LISTENING to me play, hears what they expected to hear.
I think that this will hold true most of the time. The exception is going to be in songs with iconic bass lines. For example, if you are playing Higher Ground, you better get the bass part right or even the drunk fans might notice. OTOH, if you are playing Satisfaction, and double the guitar part which is not corrent, I bet almost no one would notice or care. Now, if the guitar player got the part wrong, that would be a different story...
