I don't know if one could get away with it now, but umpteen-bajillion years ago, I took a trans-Pacific ride on an airliner with a gig-bagged bass, and the amazingly chill flight crew let me keep it propped up next to my seat the whole way. :D
The Rufus Reid book I studied from eons ago had a section on travelling with your bass I seem to recall. Had a picture of him on a plane just like the cartoon.

Planes used to have small closets at the entryway. Gentlemen travelling with suits in a garment bag could hang the bags for the flight.
On many fly-in gigs I used a leather gig bag that had a hanger hook that folded out of the end and hung like a suit bag. Could see my bass the whole flight.
This was 40 years ago ( omg.....:wideyed: the 80's was 40 years ago!!??) and, sadly, I don't think you could swing it today, unless you flew first class and prearranged it.

Yes indeed! The return flight was more crowded than the one going over, so the crew (still very nice) asked me to put it in that closet, rather than sit it beside me. Turned out to be a pretty good idea, because that flight was rough, and the bass was cushioned very nicely by the other hanging bags people had brought on.
