Now that you mention it… I did unfortunately have a bass modded at one point. Totally forgot about it! Wow.

I had a nice Schecter Stiletto converted into a fretless when I was younger and discovered who Jaco was. That bass was not meant to be fretless at all. Think modern EMG hard rock and metal type basses. I had grown out of the thrash metal scene I bought it for and was looking for a way to breathe life into it instead of selling it. Ended up at a Guitar Center somewhere, who overpaid for it, when I couldn’t offload privately.

Being a teenager and making snap judgment, irrational decisions - ha.

I had a Washburn force 40 bass I bought new way back when. The electronics failed so o put Delano pj pickups in it but I can't soldier. I never could get the new electronics to work right so I gave it away.
It a little rash on the back the through neck was perfect and the bass had great tone and played easily. I still kick myself.

So like the title suggests, anyone out there mod a bass and immediately regret doing it? I had my USA Deluxe V Jazz bass re-finshed from Olympic White (which was aging nicely) to a metal flake turquoise. When the painter refinished the bass it added about a pound of paint on it. Now the bass is much heavier, which says a lot considering it's a 5 string, and it just doesn't seam the same as before. Almost deader sounding and no sustain.

To be fair I was probably at the peak of my quarantine depression and was tinkering with all of my basses as I went from 60+ gigs a year to none. I want to sell it but I am worried I am basically going to lose my shirt on the sale because it's refinished.

Here is a photo of it. It's not too hard on the eyes but I loved it when it was Olympic White. Now it feels pretty "meh" to me. I almost want to refinish again back to white.

Anyone else out there have any bass mod regrets?View attachment 4619295

That’s a lot better than white IMO.

I have a Schecter P bass that I loved the looks of, but hated the EMG sound. I gutted it and threw in new pickups and preamp, and now I love it.

No regrets. But I’ve never done an irreversible mod either. Probably because whatever I buy is at least 95% of how I want it already. I’ll do franken-builds, restorations, or repairs. But I’m not that into buying things purely with the intent to mod them. Cool hobby if that’s your thing however.

Not immediately. I got this in the early 80's, don't remember the original finish color(s) or condition, had it refinished in tobacco sunburst and had EMG's installed. Don't remember if I kept the original pups, but I don't know where they are.

It's a '64, by the way. :banghead:

That photo was when I'd swapped necks with the 71 fretless conversion. Here's a proper pic of its current configuration along with the '71:

Looks awesome though buddy:)
I’m sure someone out there would love to own it. You’ll find the right buyer eventually. Honestly I’ve found the used market, especially where we live has really slowed since Covid times. Lots of ridiculous low ball offers on stuff I’ve posted as well. Best of luck amigo.

I have a 71 P and did the standard mods that everyone was doing in the 80’s QP pickup, BadAss Bridge, brass nut, fortunately did retain the original pick up and bridge. I think the mods helped, certainly did not hurt and have been playing it modded for close to 40 years

Switched my Peavey Dyna Bass over to BEAD. Never really got into it and never really play it. Sits in the case on the bottom of the pile. I guess it's reversible with a new nut which I may get around to.

How about...
Ripping the frets out of a 24 year old Warwick, not realizing how difficult wenge is to work with in terms of chipping and splintering, thinking its a good idea to cover it in epoxy only to have it spill out and set all over the neck and your workbench, end up sanding off all the epoxy just to end up back where you started, and then have a worthless vintage bass that someone would've liked very much if you hadn't done any of this in the first place?
Maybe I should pick up guitar and forget this whole bass thing altogether
