bass names

I'm definitely in the camp of those who think it's weird, especially for those who go beyond just a name and talk about it as if it were a person. But it's their thing, and I simply ignore it.

And then there are the truly creepy ones. "Me and Janine (note: the guitar) are heading over. I hope your wife's out of the house and the boys are warmed up, because she's feeling dirty tonight and needs more than just I can give her" was an actual message I received. That's an example I can use without causing a mod to stomp on me - it got very NC-17.

He was fired for being an hour late to practice, again. But it wasn't the only reason.

yeah janine's not the problem.

I do have a named tone, or like a kind of aesthetic of playing. you could call it a signature sound I guess. but it's not a human name. it's maybe more like a description but I consider it a name.

Re: the most famous named guitar, I think goes to Willie Nelson’s Trigger.

I only have The One bass, which I call by several different names, yet it is first and foremost Penguino.

My swirl bass (which is my #1) is named Hepzibah, named after the Starjammers comic book character, whose moniker refers to Lady Hepzibah from the Pogo comics (because Starjammers Hepzibah's actual name is a series of scents unpronounceable by humans, so Corsair took to calling her Hepzibah).

My recently acquired blue 5-string has no name yet. It hasn't earned a moniker yet, and I don't just name things arbitrarily.

For accuracy, the Pogo skunk character was Miz Mam'selle Hepzibah.

Eew, damn.

Very rarely will I give something inanimate a pet name that describes how it looks- like Big blue - because it's a big and blue bass, or Jelly bean- a red Miata I had because it looked like a jelly bean, or pew,pew my Hellcat 9 mill, because it's small and goes pew pew!

It's not like I'm sexualizing an inanimate object, that's something else, something that requires doctors.
I am only mildly touched.

I made that "correction" in post 56.

I would have corrected it in the one you quoted, but I missed the 1 hour window. And, yes, my brain was thinking "Mam'selle Hepzibah" and "Lady Kitten" which is what people used to call Starjammers Hepzibah when her design evolved from skunklike (which is cool!) to more catlike (ugh, catgirls are so trite, generic, and overplayed).

That's something I dislike about the forum- I only get a 1 hour window to edit my posts/make corrections.

So I started this post and none of basses had names. however reading through all of these responses I have come up with names for my four basses. 1) Sterling Ray 34 'Ray" 2) 2002 Fender Jazz Bass- "jazzy" 3) Michael Kelly Pinnacle 5- "Pretty girl" because shes pretty and never gets played 4) Fender P Bass- "Nina" because she is Black and Beautiful and sounds amazing

I don't believe in giving inanimate objects human names, but I do call my tenor ukes by either their manufacturer or style or color. And I have given my bass ukes actual names, of which I made headstock labels (oops, have to still shoot some of those). The names are all two syllables just for the fun of it.

I do not. However, I used to play with a guitarist who named all of his guitars. The naming system wasn't real complicated: "Blackie" for the black Les Paul, "Sylvia" for the silver Les Paul, and I forget what he called the white Les Paul...something like "Snowy," probably.

Speaking of anime, you anime fans will appreciate this:

After wracking my brain trying to think of names for two of my basses I finally had that "think less dance more" moment of clarity and named them!

The red one is Asuka (after Asuka in Evangelion). It's a bass that isn't immediately comfortable, but if I'm willing to put in the work it will improve my playing technique and posture. Plus, it has some massive and aggressive tone (especially for when my band drop-tunes). Playing any other bass after this feels like I'm doing it passively rather than active/engaged, and... that is Asuka! She doesn't like passivity; you gotta be actively engaged with her.

The blue one is Rei (after Rei in Evangelion). That one's a smooth bass that requires a gentle, nuanced touch to get the best sound out of. Quite comfortable ergonomically too. But it's no shrinking violet; this bass packs plenty of power in its tone. But it's not "aggressive" power but more unassuming 'I got nothing to prove' power. And that's Rei.

So say hi to Asuka and Rei. (And I mentioned my swirl-painted 4-string Hepzibah in an earlier post).

Some of them have names and some don't.

My #1 - a heavily modded '69 Gibson EB-0 - is Grandma.

The matching '70 set comprising of a Les Paul Bass and a Les Paul Professional guitar would be something like "Chubby One" and "Chubby Two" if I were to translate their names in English...if you've ever held one of these for a NY minute you understand why...:roflmao:

A custom made one-off guitar which I own was named after a sadly demised friend of mine who had built it.

The rest of the collection is nameless.
