Bass Neck Question

OK, I play lefty so things are limited. I currently have an Ibanez SR Premium 5 string which I love. The neck is perfect for me. I was thinking of purchasing another one and changing the pickups to get a different sound when desired. Question, any recommendations for something close the the SR neck? It is a 16.5mm. I can do a 17 but don't want to go bigger than that. I really like the thin contour of the SR.

Are you looking to buy another SR and swap the pickups? Or are you looking for a totally different bass with a neck similar to the SR?

Are you referring to the string spacing at the bridge? Ibanez includes that in the specifications for the basses on their website. At a quick look I don't see that information on a few other companies' sites.

I'd say that if you like your Soundgear, get another Soundgear. Ibanez has made thousands of different variations over the years. For pickup swaps, as far as I can tell almost all their recent and current 5-strings use unique pickup sizes but can take P2-size pickups from 3rd parties.

Better idea (IMO). May I assume you have stock Nordstrand singles? If you want to change the tonal character, ditch the stock preamp and install a 4 band Audere Pro Z with the 3-way voicing switch...it changes the character and quite markedly, I might add.

(0. your hands )
1. strings
2. preamp
3. pickups

Some time ago I wanted to ditch the infamous Bartolini-MK from my SR506, but then I decided to upgrade the preamp first (I opted for a Noll) and I went from a sterile sounding bass to a growl-machine, without needing to change the pickups

Likewise re: my 755: Kept the MK1's and added a secondhand OBP-3. The older (!) platform Audere Pro Z was installed in the premium 1405.

It won't be exactly like your Ibanez but when I hear "left-handed" and "thin, narrow neck", I think of Schecter.

Their 5 strings are great IME and they have fast necks. Might be worth checking out of you want something different in a second bass.

The newer version has interchangeable capacitors not those stupid micro-trims as pic'd. High Z mode has a high-mid boost with a fairly steep roll-off not unlike a filter based RFE. I also use Aguilar (OBP-3) and Noll but the Audere was the first to come to mind given your target.

The classic module is cool, too, but the high / medium/ low Z options will have a more profound impact as they change the load characteristics on the pickups…also going to pay a little more for the features. You can get really stupid with the programming features, too. Also easily installed with only basic soldering skills.

If you really love the neck profile, nothing wrong with getting another Soundgear.

Dean and Schecters have similar necks if you really want something different. But I would recommend trying them out, since you're really particular about the neck.
