Bass or Amp - Which is more important?

I'd go for Bass.

I used to have Squier VM 70's Jazz Bass with modded Dimarzio Model J & Gotoh bridge. It sound wonderful.

I usually rent different practice rooms in Hong Kong, so I dont have much choice regards to amp.
I admit that with a good amp, it sound what you want.

However, this bass is too heavy for me (~11lbs) and there is fret problem, so I cant get the lower action I want.

So I would go for a better quality instrument. (higher price)

Both are important. Perhaps a more important question: why do musicians obsess over this vs. that?
