Bass pet peeves

You know, for some reason I read it as you DON'T like matching headstocks. I'm a dope. Sorry...
Hey, no big deal. Truthfully, I would probably buy a bass with a non-matching headstock if it was something too cool to pass up.

Not sure if this exactly qualifies for matching.

Funny - just watched that (again) too, last week. I saw it in theater on a "first date" when I was 16!!

Anyway - I was really underwhelmed by almost all of the playing *except* Levon Helm. Man, that guy could play. The rest? Meh.
I think that's why they left the drums alone on the overdub, a lot of partying going on in the ole Winterland that night. My first date was Godzilla vs. Mothra. I was wearing my Rat Fink pendant, I was so cool back then:thumbsup: Jim

And to stay OT, neck dive, pups getting in the way where I place my thumb or fingers, bridges that are way over engineered, noisy pups, sharp edges that dig into my chest. Jim

Neck Dive: It's kinda annoying how something so simple is such a total pain.

My six string has it. I actually took a heavy metal strap and bolted it to the back of my bass where the top strap connector is. I then bolted the strap connector to the end of it. It brings the strap out about three inches. It substantially reduced neck dive.

No knock on Zon Sonus basses, they are wonderful playing and sounding, but that was the only reason I didn't whip out my credit card and walk out the store with one. Maybe there is a sample variation among them, but if the one I tried didn't start heading for the floor everytime I took my hand off the neck, I would have been playing one for the past 15 years. Just that sleight shift in balance even if my forearm is on the upper edge has been a deal killer for a number of makes and models. The very definition of "pet peeve" I guess. Jim

Taking a beautifully crafted and finished bass and bashing and scraping the crap out of it (and charging more!!), because somewhere on this planet, someone thinks (and has the cash for), that it is cool to buy a pre aged instrument that he/she has not put the miles on himself! This makes me throw up in my mouth thinking about it..................View attachment 619229
We've got Keith Richards to thank for this - says it all.....

I'd mainly be concerned about adequate output, playability, and comfort. From there I can pretty much envision the life new strings would bring to it.

Agreed - I bought my main bass at GC with dead strings - but I could tell it played and knew that I liked the sound of a Lakland 4-94 with new strings... but it sure seems that any bass at GC with dead strings is set up terribly too - and that is KEY.

Multiple people mentioned active basses without a convenient, tool-less battery door. Gotta agree with that one.

I've always been annoyed by knobs that no indicator that lets you see how they're set just by looking at them.

On the Ergonomic-Front…really cool, awesome looking/sounding basses that have a super-flat fretboard radius. My hands prefer a curvier board and it kills me when I see something really neat (e.g.: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) and I just know my fretting hand won't bond with it. :banghead:

On the Esthetics-Front…as much as I love, and prefer, painted or matching headstocks, it's not a deal-killer. But I'm not here to praise, but rather to grouse. :sour:

Matte/flat finish on the body.

Hey, there's nothing wrong my MY matte-finished instruments! :D

When people do bass demos online but all they do is slap...

*Slapping is fine but I can't hear the basses true qualities if all you do is slap for the entire video.

+1. To expand, online demos where they only play one style and don't adjust any of the knobs/settings. They should be showing the versatility of the bass, not just slapping, palm muting (the entire time), picking, or fingerstyle only the entire time. Same goes for amps.

I agree on the Demo-Front…a proper demo should showcase the capabilities of an instrument, not be a canvas for bass-wankery. Nothing wrong with some style and flair once they've showcased the basic properties, but dammit guys, let us actually-hear the effin' notes! Play some open strings and let them ring-out for cryin' out loud!! :rage:

This also brings up a newly-discovered pet peeve o' mine…bass teachers who thoughtlessly wank around and to show-off their über-chops on an instrument during beginner-level classes!

I try to go to my local Guitar Center's group beginner bass classes as often as possible. Sure, I hope I might learn something fundamental that I might've missed in the past, but that's not the main reason. I go to meet other people who're interested in learning bass. Plus, it's an excuse to bring one of my instruments in and maybe talk tech-stuff with customers and employees.

Now, here's the rub…more often than not, the guy teaching the class will break into a showy display of bass-wankery. I can understand if the intent is to show beginners what they could be capable of someday. But while they're head-down/eyes-closed in their groovilicious moment, I'm watching the other students. One or two look on in awe and wonderment, but many, many more get this look of dread and trepidation. To me, it screams anywhere from, "I can't do that! Does he expect me to do that?!" to "Ugh! I'm such a newbie!" I would like to think this is just me reading between the lines too much, but all-too-often someone(s) quietly whispers that very sentiment to me.

Way to bolster your student's confidence, schmuck! It makes me want to shout, "Why don't you come down to Earth with the rest of us mere-mortals, you Flea/Geddy/Marcus-wannabe! Can't you see you're scaring some of your students?!", but that would be impolitic to do in a class setting.

P.S.: Any surprise that one particular "teacher" I'm thinking of tried to impress me with a dazzling array of pedals he'd assembled that would rival most guitarist's boards? I just wanted to say, "That's great and all, but which one makes your bass sound like an actual bass?"

P.P.S.: This is not meant to be a slam at Guitar Center. Some stores may suck it fiercely, but my local one is quite nice and has a great staff, even if one or two has their head up up in the clouds.

Slap bass used in songs that absolutely do not require slap bass. If you're in a hard rock or metal band and want to add slap to a song and your name is not Flea or Les Claypool...don't.

Doug Wimbish and Mr. Trujillo would like a word.....

The boys in "Death Angel" may have something to say too. (00:43 and on)

Mind you, "Act III" was them breaking out of their hardcore/thrash beginnings. I read somewhere one/some of the then-members wished they could drop the band name as it didn't fit their evolving style of music. Sometimes "brand recognition" can hinder as much as it helps.
