you said this was his first missed gig in three years. if he really was sick, you should take it easy on him IMO. im sure missing the gig wasnt a decision that he made lightly.

Bass player bails on gig 1.5 hours before load in

No, we love you guys. Cleaning the yard biscuits and training you that we need a solid "one" is sometimes a hassle but you all more than makeup for it with the years of loyal companionship. My daughter takes our drummer on walks around the neighborhood, he's a big hit with the kids and also protects her from gang members.
As far as what you should do. Fire the guitar player.
Should I fire him? Bass player in my band let us know he was sick, crapping and puking himself an hour and a half before load in.
We played anyway. What should we do?
why don't you believe him? perhaps we need more context. what more is there to this story other than a band member getting too sick to play just before a show?

I had something similar happen to me happen last year. What made it really suck was that it was New Year's Eve, and we had a gig booked for that night.
I went to bed the night before feeling perfectly fine, probably around 10 PM or so. However, I woke up around 1:30 AM, not feeling well at all. Started having diarrhea. Tried to take something and get back to sleep. Couldn't sleep at all. Ended up getting up for a bit, tried to go back to sleep later that morning, couldn't do it. Constant diarrhea throughout the day. I was holding out hope I could get better, but it wasn't happening. Around 5 PM, I threw up, and I knew there was no way I could do the show.
We ended up having to cancel the gig, as we were only a three piece band, and there was no way a replacement bass player could be found in that short period of time. It sucked, but it happens. I would go easy on your bass player. People get sick. That's life.

Lest anyone think I'm a ruthless d!ck bag drummer....I was never gonna fire Dwayne. Just wanted to see how many of you guys would recommend cutting him loose.

One gig, 1/2 hour before starting time, I started getting nauseous. I took a couple Rolaids, and got on stage. 15 minutes into playing, I felt it all coming up.
I ran the length of the long room toward the bathroom, but on the way showered an employee and a patron with vomit.
I puked for 10 minutes, and then spent another 10 washing the puke from my beard. Then the diarrhea hit. I was emptied out when I left the bathroom.
I returned to stage, sick as a dog (no further vomiting) I made it through the gig, but was unable to pack up. My head hurt so much and every muscle and joint, even my fingers ached horribly.
The next week, I come to find out the cause was tainted donuts from a local Cub Foods. An employee did not wash their hands after crapping. The county had over 240 confirmed cases of food poisoning. I had one of those donuts that morning.
I was forever referred to at that place as "the guy who threw up all over everybody." We continued to play there once a month. It was a Christian coffeehouse. I contacted both "victims" and profusely apologized. I was too sick to feel bad about it the night it happened. They were forgiving and gracious.
It happens. I have gotten sick at a gig only twice. Neither had any alcohol involved.
Confirm he was sick, and give him a pass.

context for everyone: I let Mark know on Friday that the fam was sick but I was still hoping to make it. took a quick nap around 4pm Saturday and woke up at 6pm sick, texted him from the toilet to let him know what was going on. We play originals so sub is not much of an option for us.
anyway today we were talking about how funny it is that TB always jumps to fire em or quit so I suggested he put this up. and you guys didn't disappoint. we hate Dave (our guitar player)
Wrong, my friend. Any TB'er worth his/her salt will forever extol the virtues of a decent drummer.
What we don't like are bad drummers, but I guess anyone who plays any instrument in any band will not lavish praise on any other band member not up to the job.

The guys in Guns-n-Roses did gigs while dope sick, with 5 gallon buckets behind the amps so they could puke. He should have taken an entire package of Imodium, grabbed a bucket and did the show a la GG Allin.
