Bass Players buying guitars

So over the years I've dabbled in electric guitar, I even played guitar for about 2 years in a band and recorded an album just to take a break from bass. It was a lot of fun and something I'm very proud off.

In 2007 I bought a Fender 52' hot rod telecaster and just had it around for goofing off at home and then that period in the band. I have since bought countless guitars and acoustics only to realize I don't play enough electric and or I suck and I just sell them and buy more bass stuff :)

Does anyone else do the same thing?

I do. But I keep everything whether I can play it well or not.

It took me a few years and quite a few electric guitars for me to realize I am an acoustic guitar player (in addition to my bass playing). Pretty satisfying (to me) to not have an electric guitar and all it accoutrements.

I also have a MIM Tele that I take out and play once a year whether it needs it or not. I do play a lot of acoustic guitar and mandolin though. Probably as much as I play bass. Just depends on my mood.

You couldn't have picked a better electric 6 string than the Tele IMHO. I have several (many) 6 strings. Yet my Tele gets all the action. Ironically, when I was 12 y/o starting on the guitar, I thought the Tele was the most hideous 6 string specimen.

To me, electric bass, electric guitar and acoustic guitar are three completely separate instruments and I definitely maintain a different approach for each one.

At any point over the past 40+ years I've owned more guitars than basses, which may sound odd for someone who considers himself to be a bass player first and foremost. OTOH, when I was on the top of my game I was arguably a more accomplished acoustic guitar player than a bass player.

I need to play my acoustics more...said the bass player...:bassist:

I used to have a Rick 625 guitar that was given to me by a now-deceased friend. I traded it for my first Rick 4001. I wish I hadn't.

Today, really the only guitar I'd be interested in buying besides that Rick is a Terry Kath tribute Tele. But not to play, more for sentimental value.

Terry Kath; An underrated guitar player. He was excellent! Played lead and sang at the same time.

At some point I needed a guitar for some recording projects that I had going on, so I bought me a cheap SG copy as well as an acoustic. I've had them for around a year, but eventually I gave them as a gift since they didn't see much action outside of my recording sessions; they proved to be a great gift since a new guitarist was born! :thumbsup:

I started playing guitar not long after I started playing bass. Bass has always been the priority though. I mainly use guitars when working on music at home. Vary rarely i will play a gig with an acoustic guitar. Mainly those are duo acoustic situations where the other person is doing the bulk of the singing so I'm either doubling or playing lead. I don't even own a guitar amp. At home I use a tech 21 gt2 direct for electric guitar. Sounds better than most cheap guitar amps imo. I go through phases with guitar. Basically I'm the same way where I'll often sell guitar gear to fund more bass gear. Especially at times when I'm staying busy playing bass in a band that's actively writing new material. But slower times like now with covid shutdown and at times when bands I was in would focus on gigging and take longer breaks from writing I would get more into guitar. I don't spend a ton of money on guitars though. Never owned like a $2k+ prs or anything like that. Mainly ESP LTD 400 and 1000/deluxe series. I like those series because they are relatively affordable and come with good pickups. The two guitars I'd like to try at the moment are the prs se 277 baritone and the fender player series tele with maple board.

We must be alter-egos, or something of the kind.
I've tried acoustic guitar (owned and disposed of two of them) and acoustic upright bass (still have that one) but I'm an electric player at heart.

I got 7 string guitar and usually use it in personal stuff. I use slap and double thumb and pick with baas rig. It is for djent kind of sound .

I bought my first acoustic guitar a month or two after buying my first bass. I bought my first electric guitar seven years later. Since then, I did at one time own two other electrics, they are both now gone as are all but one of the guitar amps I owned. I still own one acoustic guitar. Neither guitar is worth enough money to bother selling.

Despite having guitars around for 47 years, I've never really learned to play beyond cowboy chords, E and A shape barres, basic fingerpicking and Neil Young-ish leads because I never put the practice time in. A left hand injury a couple of years ago makes it difficult to play chords so I'm done with my guitar hero fantasies :whistle:
