Bass recording - what's your chain??

I need to look into that Eleven... Only wish it had more bass settings...
I used the Amplitube Plugin a few times and it worked fine. Just wondering how the Eleven is.. It is multitudes better than the Bass Pod XT pro?

My typical chain ..... Alleva 4 or 5 string > REDDI > A -Design EM500 Gold > BAC500 Comp > RME> Sonar

Fender Jazz w/EMG's > Ampeg SVT-IIP > BBE Sonic Maximizer (Pre & BBE are in my live rig rack) > M Audio fast track USB interface > Macbook > Adobe Audition. Add a little compression once the track is recorded.

This usually gives me a good chunky bottom end tone with enough growl to cut that I use on most hard rock recordings.

I'll start with that the SVP is certainly missed. Great preamp. Don't sell it.
The SVT DI is a simple tube DI box with no EQ. Only an option to use the tube or bypass it for the Line and DI outs. When I had the SVP, I didn't have an MBox or a MAC email machine to properly record at home with it, so it's tough to compare. I bet if you leave the EQ flat on the SVP, and try post EQ so the tubes are used, it would record great. I find that the flattest signal with tube "life" gets the best results at home, and it's the easiest to work with.

Gonna try a new chain sometime next week:

- Avalon U5 / Sansamp RBI / Sansamp RPM (three different channels) into a ProFire 2626 and then use just the speaker portion of Amplitube to add some meat if needed.

The goal is to see if I can sound almost as good as just plugging the bass straight into the mixing board. Probably not, but worth a shot. :)

I'll start -

Jazz bass --> FMR RNP -->Behringer compressor (lightly compressed) -->Echo Mia Soundcard to Sonar 6. I then use the Ampeg Pluggin, EQing and more compressing, if needed.

I also have a Bass PodXT, as well as a Sansamp DI that I sometimes use. Hopefully I'll have a rough mix tomorrow of this setup so you can critique/ make suggestions - which would be SO helpful.

I appreciate y'all playing along. This will be helpful to myself - and hopefully others, as well.

I would really ditch that begringer comp. I have had a few of them until I just faced that it does more hard than good. You will get better results with a plugin! my chain used to be the GAP preamp into focusrite liquid channel 56, just kissing an la2a plugin, if I really needed some character I would use either Ampeg SVX plug or Bass Amp Room plugin...then cut and boost some frq. according to the kick drum and mix to taste!

I would bet it would make a difference. I use an Aguilar Tone Hammer and run a "Dry" Pre-eq signal from the XLR out and a "drive" signal from the 1/4 out with the AGS engaged from the TH into two channels on the board. We can then blend the clean and drive signals to taste.

Your idea is along the lines of what Geddy Lee does - that is Avalon U5, RPM, and a Trace tube head into a Palmer speaker sim. Three channels, blended to taste.

Well, maybe I'm ripping off Geddy when it comes to recording chain, but wait until you hear my new song "Tom Sawyer"!

Bass ----> Aguilar 900 Tube Direct Box ---> Vintech X81 preamp ---> Empirical Labs Distressor ELX-8 (compressor). Has a nice clean and warm sound.

Thinking about re-amping through various miked speaker cabinets if I need low end.

This weekend I will record bass trying some stuff and combinations just to know what it sounds like (7 tracks at once for bass only!) :hyper:

Bass -> DI -> OD -> Amp -> DI out -> Speaker (15") -> Shure Beta 58A, Sennheiser e 945 and e 902, Audio Technica AT2035
all signals going into a Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 and then in Capture -> later Cubase for Mixing

A recent project I recorded at home for an EP was received very well by the artist. He loved the tone.

I've also used:

Fender Jazz Deluxe > Peavey MAX Tube bass preamp > Edirol M16DX > Sonar X1 Producer

I've substituted a Radial D2 passive DI for EWI which also works well. Radial Engineering has excellent customer service. :cool:

The EWI DI is supposed to be a "poor man's" Countryman Type 85. I think it's excellent for the price. Both the churches where I play on worship teams use the Radial Engineering JDI. That's another nice DI.
