as a man with ink dating a girl with ink, i will say that ink can be sexy when tasteful.
to the OP, i'm of the mind that one should have a great strong idea of what one wants before one gets it. knowing where it goes is at most 5% of the whole ordeal. think long and hard about everything you're planning on getting on you. once you've taken the time and know it's not a rash decision (in either the placement or the design), then rock the hell out with your inked self!!

Remember, ink is forever. I have 6 tattoos. All well thought out.

Yeah, take your time. As Gecko 5 says, will you still be as enthusiastic about it in ten years time ? Personally, I don't like any decoration that I cant take off or put on at will.
Several liquid molten looking bass clef's shooting down from storm clouds would be cool. Symbolizing thunder as the bass sound.
Sam - if you want ink, get ink. I had my backpiece done as a 30th b'day gift to myself and could not be happier with it. Do what you want to do
Might be good to plan this a bit - you WILL change shape... You WILL get older... Get a tat, but try not to get one that will look pathetic when you're 40...
make sure that you keep a close relationship between the tattoo artist, and whoever is designing the tattoo (assuming it isnt the artist). also, make sure you get something that isnt too intricate that itll turn into a smudge or blur in a couple years. a mediocre artist will not give you good advice in this area. some places over charge, but you also, to some degree, get what you pay for.

once you know that, think about angles and whatnot. on your side rib area, you have a ton of room. how much coverage do you want? how many people do you want to consult for designs? i would wait a couple years to get it all ironed out, but i also designed all my stuff. i like that route. if you hate it, you can only blame yourself.

I'm thinking about getting my very first tattoo. A 1951 Fender P Bass or a Leo Fender something. Whether or not if I do it is another thing.
Then it hit me. Why not ask the Talk Bass community to "show and tell" their bass and bass related tattoos. Up rights included.

Hey guys, I am the owner of the St. James tattoo pictured (that is not obviously broken because I closed my Flickr account ages back). Here is a link to a recent photo after a touch-up.All great tattoos, but check this guy's out!

Also, regarding James' feet. The image comes from a book called "How The Fender Bass Changed The World" and the art is (I believe) based on some relatively famous Christian art. I was shown the original painting by an art school friend of mine but I don't recall the name of it for the life of me. But the feet in the tattoo, the Fender Bass book and the old Christ image are all the same. It's not based on James' foot injuries, it's just weird feet. haha.
I got this one week ago, a Gibson Thunderbird logo (with some shading added). It was about two days old when I took this pic and was about to peel, so it looks a little funny. But it turned out real nice.

Awesome. I've got a T-bird tattoo, too. Mine is all black, though. Used it to cover my ex's name. Live and learn.
