BASS SAFARI in NYC?

no offense intended man, I am NOT going all the way to the East coast to stop in on a GC. vintage room or no. We got 2 of em here in the SF/Oakland bay area, and they are my least favorite place to go for music items. The salesmen are misinformed or misleading. The gear is atrocious, and its filled with smelly kids playing flavor of the month dreck, and usually one guy playing "stairway to heaven". My favorite line ever;
"oh a professional bassist was in here yesterday, he really liked that bass" referring to some unmemorable cheapo. Once I fled in disgust because the whole store could not find a single cable with a right angle end. Then the guy attempted to talk me out of my need for one!
Here is a helpful hint; when a guy over 25 walks into your guitar store, he probably already knows what he likes, stay out of his way until he makes eye contact!

yea, you should be sorry, for yours is a rude post. I mention the Vintage Room, as they currently have two pre 65 P's, some nice 70's P. and some other interesting stuff. I didn't tell you to go the bass room.

Next time, take a deep breath, and pause before you hit "Submit Reply", please.

So bottom line, MTD is in woodstock/borderline Kingston, Spector in Saugerties i believe and no clue where Citron is. There is another lesser kown builder somewhere abouts too, wish i knew more. I could give more info if need be, I tend to be vague a lot, PM me or just post it right here.

Tony Levin I knew of - I see him in the ads often. But Metheny? He lives around there? I have Never caught him playing anywhere nearby. If I saw such an ad, I'd be tripping over myself getting to the show.

The 14h street GC Bass Room usually has a nice used collection as well. Theres a Pedulla 6 string in there for 1300 or so. AN Ibanez BTB 1006(last time I checked). A 70's Ibanez Musician and a couple other oldies but goodies. They have tons of Fenders and Musicman. ANd quite a few Modullus basses as well. It is worth checking out.

The vintage room alone is enugh to make one go get a bank loan...

no, there's not.....Keep in mind there are 1.6 million people or so in Manhattan, 2 mill plus in Brooklyn, but there are another like 16 million people in the metro area.....and you are not really going to the turf of that 16 million, except for the NJ center. Newark, Tarrytown, Morristown, Greenwich, etc.. all have music stores, but its a haul to get there. What you have listed is frankly the "top shelf" anyway.

umm, Epifani looks to be right around the corner from my apt, maybe I will drop in there!

yeah, i think they call themselves brooklyn gear. and another +1 for the GC in nyc. they get lots of exotics used. i've seen sadowsky's on the wall in there. the vintage room is sweet, but pricey. also, for the upstate guys, definitely call. citron does his work from his shop off his home, so it isn't a "store" so much.

also, and i'm not recommending this guy, cause he IS a scumbag, but there is a guy in NYC, joeygmusic that has an incredible collection of european basses. he'll try to rip you off, but he may be in not so good financial shape and you may be able to get a nice deal out of desperation for him to sell a bass.

i by no means recommend dealing with this guy, but the collection of instruments he has is pretty mind boggling. he was where i first discovered morch's work!

yeah ther is this dismaying trend of people with no talent or love of music that open stores and venues and labels just to victimize young artistic types. It's called the music business. Sounds like a couple guys we have in the bay area. I know how to deal with them, but I learned the HARD way. :scowl:

Really? It looks like the Oakland SF bay area has almost twice as many music stores. Though it seems NY has the edge on Bass specific manufacturers. I'm going to see what else I can dig up. I thought I knew where all the music stores around here were, but my list about teh bay area has showed nme a few I didnt know about.
Well i just got a little digital camera so I can take pics. Hopefully the various shop owners wont trip out or be uptight. I may have to turn the flash off!
Ooh sneaky, I am taking pictures of your stock so I can post it on the internet so people might come to your store.
