Bass Setup Help

Hi I have a friends bass I am doing a basic setup on. It is a 2 Pickup J Bass Kit that he and his dad built several years ago.
I have put on a set of D'Addario XL Nickle Wound EXL170 Regular Light Gauge strings 45-100
The setup is
1. Neck is straight.
2. All string bridge height adjustments are as low as they will go.
3. Putting a capo at fret 1 the string heights at the 12th fret are
E = 3.5 mm
A = 3.5 mm
D = 3,2 mm
G = 3.2 mm
How does this sound.
I probably will need to shim the neck so the bridge string adjusters are not this low.
Will be first time doing this with very basic tools.

Ideally I would like to have it so i can adjust between
E = 3-3.5 mm
A = 3-3.5 mm
D = 2.5-3 mm
G = 2.5-3 mm

First, the neck should not be straight, it should have a little relief.

The string heights you specify are all quite high. If you need to shim the neck to get them lower (the bridge is as low as it will go), then a partial shim in the butt end of the neck pocket will get you where you need to be.
