Bass shopping

So I'm active duty and deployed, and since I got to the FOB, I've been bass shopping for a little coming home present from me to me! One of my fellow bassists is recommending the Schecter, he said their necks are small. I'm a small 5'2" girl and he was surprised that I was holding my own with the Ibanez I use now. I play in a metal band called Midgard (Link Removed) and was wondering if you guys could throw out some recommendations on a bass that would be ideal for someone my size for the type of music we play (metal).

1st off - thanks for your service...

Next - Schecter isn't a bad choice, but I'd recommend checking out Ibanez - for weight, neck and body size, and playing metal - they're hard to beat, IMO... Start at the sr500s and go up - you can't go wrong... I have some fairly expensive basses, but an sr905 I paid less than $500 for still gets plenty of work...

- georgestrings

And thank you!! :)

I have 2 Ibanez basses now...one 4 string and the other 5. I had my friend adjust the action and raise the pick-ups for me so I don't have to pluck the strings as hard, which was a HUGE improvement! He said when he shook my hand, he couldn't believe I was playing that bass, but I guess I just kind of got used to it. I did buy it spurt of the moment so I had to find something quick, I just looked on craigslist and there it was...Midgard's bassist before me left the band kind of suddenly and all I had at the time was my 5 string. So I figured since I'm getting some extra money and the band is holding my place for me until I return, I can probably look into something more high end...not that there's anything wrong with what I have now. But it's always good to have a few guitars on the hook as a back up.

It's hard to say,, look around and see what looks good then go play them , you never know what's gonna work for you,, when I look I always go to look and end up with something else lol,, thanks for your service and good luck to you!

I am actually 'parting with' a Sterling Ray 34ca- in part because the neck is a bit too narrow for me (but mostly not crazy about the MM sound).

I don't know about Music Man necks... but the Sterling Ray34ca is very narrow and thin (I have a Geddy Lee neck- this seems a bit narrower)... mine's a bit heavy, though, at 9.6 lbs.

Here's a link to mine (not intended as a sales solicitation)

The active electronics can give you a nice PUNCH!!

(thx for serving!)

So I may have to hit up a guitar store and just try them out. I wouldn't want to take home shoes without trying them on first! :) But I'm on just Musician's Friend looking at some. My 5 string has the active pick-ups, my 4 string does not, and I use that one through the majority of our songs. We only have like 2 songs right now that I use the 5 string on.
