Bass straight into PA sub - is this possible?

I would rent an amp for one night.

You are going to need something kinda powerful if you need to compete with a full band with no reinforcement

We use Mackie powered sub's and Hi Packs for our PA. We had one of the subs blow. Speaker and amp. Rather than throw it out, I removed the blown amp and reckoned the 15" speaker. I cut off the front outer baffle board leaving the exposed 15" and the port below. I use this paired with a Ampeg PF350. Outstanding tone and it's much smaller than my other amps. So yes, you can use a sub. I've been doing it for a while now.

No, you cannot.

You can use subs to complement a bass rig, but you cannot use subs instead of a bass rig.

If you do, you will lose all the mids and highs that allow the bass to be heard and sound like a bass.

This, today our soundman decided to turn down the volume on the mains and let the subs handle the bass. According to one of our guitar players that was in the audience: I felt the bass but I could not hear individual notes

You need full range cabs, subs usually cut frequencies at 250Hz
