P Bass with Dimarzio Split P and DR Sunbeams is a killer combo. Really anything + DR Sunbeams gets a lot of love from me

Edit: Also, I've got an 89 Ibanez SR1000 with a set of EMG-X PJs and 18v preamp strung with DR Black Beauties that I would describe as the perfect, quintessential bass tone. It could be mistaken for a MIDI patch it is so flawlessly consistent from one note to the next. Japanese made Ibanez basses are really incredibly well made instruments.

I really liked the finger style sound on my AO 60s Jazz with a broken in set of the stock 7250s. A bit too stiff for me though so I went to my all time favorite Sunbeams. Still sounds great, not as classic but these are a newer set. Let’s see in a month.

2009 Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass with D’Addario Black Nylon Tapewounds. Powerful, expressive, and almost entirely devoid of finger/string noise. Not many people notice or care about bass tone, but sometimes I get very nice comments.

My Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling (US) strung with GHS Pressurewounds sounds some kind of wonderful. Exactly the bass tones and feel I've always had in my skull.
My other one with Ernie Ball Slinky cobalt flatwounds is pretty good, too, and after the passive conversion should get even cooler.
My fretless 'Jazzcision' ('88 Japanese Jazz Bass Special neck on a Warmoth flame maple over alder Dinky J body with EMG GZR-P pickup/electronics) is also pretty amazing with Pressurewounds.
My fretless Tacoma Thunderchief with Rotosound TruBass tapewounds makes shockingly convincing upright sounds with medium-high action and a heavy, thumpy, sorta upright-style right hand technique.

i have sunbeams on my Brubaker Brute MJX5 and for me the tone is perfect. I've replaced the pickups with Aguilar HC-60s and the preamp with a Bartolini 3-band. The sunbeams work really really well here, I think they're a great match for the pickups. Lots of control over the tone at the fingertips, it gets growly really nicely. Prior to the Aggies i had Bartolini classic bass pickups in there. There were of course super-articulate and full. But getting them to "growl" was a challenge.
