Yes and no. First of all, mind you, I use the term "P bass" generically for any bass with a split P pickup in the middle position.

Over the years this included a Stagg P (stock pickup and Nordstrand P), Apollo J (modded with Nordstrand P), Yamaha BB (stock), Fender P (stock), Lakland Glaub (stock Fralin and Wilde P46), and a parts P with Wilde P46. I may be forgetting some...

The last two I have currently, and recently did a some experimenting with both pickups and strings. Regardless of pickups, the Lakland IMO just sings with middy strings (old nickel rounds, Pressurewounds, and particularly TI flats), but doesn't sound to my liking with fresh strings (and particularly not with stainless steel rounds). The parts P works really well with bright rounds, even though I've sworn off those strings in the past.

In short, I keep learning the same lesson - you need to match the strings to the particular bass.
