MusicMan Sabre with EB Slinky sound bright for a pretty long time. They aren't as harsh as some.
This combo is absolutely slaying through my headphones in my dark room for the last 7 weeks. My dog seems to dig it. My invisible audience (in my room) seems to like bassists more than drummers. I can take a break and go "backstage" to my kitchen and fix a snack or a drink. Then it's like an encore when I pick the bass and the imaginary audience goes bananas. There's an imaginary fight breaking out by the bar, that's unusual in my gigs but my imaginary friends are drinking too much because they have been cooped up for a long time so they're cutting loose. In my room the imaginary drummer (or the app) stops playing at the end of each number, I almost never have to listen to him play a mini solo after every friggin' song while I'm waiting to start the next piece. Fake drummers are way more respectful than real drummers. Plus a drummer app never spills drinks on my amp and never tries to "play" the bass using drumsticks.

Spector w/ maple wings & DR Hi-Beams. Best tone I've ever gotten! I use the Hi-Beams on a Spector w/ swamp ash wings and it's just not the same... you make a good point, maybe that bass couples better with a different string type?I have a particular bass that is so perfectly matched to its strings that it sounds noticeably better than my other instruments. It's a PRS Kingfisher w/ passive EMGs and Fodera Nickels. The original pickups were singles with dummy coils and they were extremely noisy, picking up radio stations and whatnot. After I swapped out the pickups (I know passive EMGs don't get a lot of love around here) and threw on the Foderas, it became a completely different animal. I love the deep, complex sound it produces. To see how much of what I was hearing was chemistry, I swapped sets of strings between 3 basses. ALL of them sounded worse.I'm a big believer that certain string sets just go with certain basses. SO... what is the best sounding combo of bass and strings that you currently own? I have a feeling that we're gonna hear a lot of "P with Labella Flats" and some "J with Pressurewounds", both of which I love but maybe someone will start raving about some unexpected combination most of us haven't considered.

Great combo: DR Pure Blues on Reverend Mercalli 5. Full range and lots of ring.
Didn't work: GHS Pressurewounds on G&L L2500: The E through G sounded great, but the B didn't work.

Tagima TW-66 with EMG GZR pickups and Pyramid Gold 0.40 flatwounds.
Since the GZR can be kind of aggressive when dimed, the strings help mellow it out while still having an aggressive tonal option and it sound real vintage and thumpy when I woll down the tone.
50% with just a bit of overdrive and you're in Vintage '70s rock heaven
EBMM StingRay 5 with D'Addario NYXL.

Ibanez SR700 modded to have US CBC Bartolini soapbars and an Audere preamp (microswitch is now the impedance switch and the micro-LED for battery status is mounted into the electronics cavity cover on the back). This bass sounds absolutely fabulous with TI Jazz Roundwounds. It's a match made in heaven.
It took me awhile to sort out the strings on my G&L fretless L2000. But I finally put on a set of D'Addario half wound strings in a medium gauge (.050/.070/.085/.105) and the bass came just plain awesome sounding and with an incredible feel. So much has to do with our technique, too. I've finally come to a great combination that really unlocks the sounds that I can get from this bass.
I had a Ray34CA a few years ago. It came with Cobalt rounds, and I was not impressed with how they sounded on that bass. Then I put on my fave strings -TI Jazz Flats, sounded horrible, Chromes were worse. Boomers, bad. On a whim, I tried Labella Black tapes(50-105 set), the bass absolutely came alive. Sounded just killer. I figured what might be better is the 60-115 set....nope, did not sound good at all. So for that bass, it was Labella black tapes of a specific gauge.
Funny you should mention Pure Blues... The only bass I have those on is my #1, a G&L SB-2T. They sounded like crap on the Kingfisher but they sure do work on that bass! I really like those strings.
I have this pairing as well and it definitely works.
