you can, however i wouldnt use the distortions, od's, fuzzes etc as they would lose alot of low end. i would use it strictly for modulation (delay, reverb, chorus etc)
For some sounds it will be fine but most of the sounds are more guitar oriented which can be a good or bad thing. I normally use a BP8 or B2.1u but for one retro rock project I am using a Zoom G1x because the sounds are just more appropriate.
FWIW once upon a time there was no such thing as a bass specific effect pedal
