Your experience has everything to do with being offended by slight inconveniences, and they say young people have an entitlement problem.

I personally prefer a withering gaze to a finger. I will take the lane, as I am legally allowed, when safety dictates. I will do so while commuting by bicycle as well.

As I said, the thread was started to show off bikes, not kick open the door for a debate over whether or not one bike holding up 50 cars is OK. That's why I even apologized for posting. Let it go.

That being said, you don't know me. Making claims as to a possible sense of entitlement on my part is ridiculousness bordering on stupidity.

I use MapMyRide for downloading GPS and HRM data. I have a number of friends across the country who use it and we share data about our rides for motivation. I like to log weather conditions in the comments so I can fairly compare rides from previous dates.

I've been absent from there for a while. I'll hopefully be back online there this spring if my health holds.

Do you use the garmin software? MMR interfaces beautifully with the Garmin. In fact once I get my Garmin downloaded to MMR I can open my ride up in Google maps and see my route as if I had been running a camera. Of course it isn't from my ride, but it will sync up the video with my GPS, speed and heart rate data so I can see exactly where my butt got kicked!

Keep all my routes , mostly MTB.

I also really like Starva , you can upload your routes and contribute to the overall map , very nice.

Just checked the Strava link. I've ridden all the routes listed locally, and many not attempted or documented there. It's mostly gravel south of here, and it seems nobody else rides it, but I've had some nice rides there.

Hmm... Bicycles...

I couldn't have cared much about any bicycles until I quit smoking- took up riding so I wouldn't gain weight. I love riding, I love bikes... It's something else to get dorky about. A lot of my older pix of the 730, 620 and 400 got eaten by Imageshack.

I love old touring bikes- my favorite- 1985 Trek 720:

It was a "top of the line" bike for its day, and I've had fun getting more 'boutique-y' parts on it- finned Scott/Mathauser pads, DiaCompe QRs, Phil Wood/Super Champion wheels, Brooks C17, Suntour XC/XC Pro RD... it's a pretty wonderful riding bike with some pretty badass parts on it.

Speaking of parts... this is my 1986 Trek 400 Elance.

There's something outrageously cute about seeing XC Pro derailleurs, Ofmega made Avocet cranks and RINO and Campy chainrings on a 2nd from entry level Trek. To be fair- it's no ordinary 'entry level' style bike- a double butted 531 main frame with Tange CrMo fork and stays... Drive train is 6 speed Accushift with Command Shifters in the front (the butterfly shifters that mount inboard of the brake levers) and brakes are TriColor 600/Ultegra- dual pivot in the front, single in the back. Wheels are Matrix Safari rims with Maillard 700 in the front, 600 sealed in the back.


I really need to get new pix of this- 1978 Trek 730.

It was originally built as a 736- all Shimano 600 "Arabesque." I think that stuff is... not good. So it's built up with Superbe brakes and levers, the shifters are (right now) Simplex Retrofrictions, Suntour Cyclone 1st Gen derailleurs and Stronglight 99BIS crankset. The only 600 pieces left on it are the 600/Rigida wheels... it's a great riding bike- really light and fun. Really, the rack is much more level than it looks.

1984 Schwinn Voyageur SP

This bike is a whole lot of badass in one package. Schwinn's top of the line Touring Bike- from when a "touring bike" was the money maker. Columbus SL/SP frame, top of the line components all the way around. In this pic I have the Cyclone RD on there, right now it's sporting an XC Pro. Just a really, really great bike. It's getting torn apart now to get a dent filled. *arrrgghh*

And the bike that was formerly known as "best friend bike." 1985 Trek 620.

A really class A touring bike- Since getting the 720, I've been riding this one much less. But it's still a really really great bike.

I had been riding the train and taking the company shuttle bus from the train station to work for several years when the company decided to cancel the shuttle. I'd sold my long unused bike a couple of years earlier but here in metro Chicago you cannot take normal bikes on rush hour trains anyway. So I bought the folder on the right to commute with and of course started riding it recreationally and rekindled my love of cycling. I quickly ran into the limitations of the Dahon for long distance riding and bought the Fuji Absolute 1.0 to get around those limitations. The Dahon is fun to commute on and the Fuji is great for everything else. The Fuji came with a flat bar which I could not be comfortable on for over 30 miles but after several false starts I ended up with a Jeff Jones Loop H bar that works great for me. The Fuji is rolling on 38 mm Vittoria Voyager Hyper tires that are quite efficient and will go anywhere I want to go and they deal well with dodgy road surfaces on long rides. The Fuji is aluminum with a carbon fork and that combination works great! The bike I sold shortly before getting these two had been with me about 30 years and had accumulated 1500 miles. Now I am riding over 2000 miles a year. I hope to be riding my fifth RAGBRAI this summer, does anyone else here do the annual tour of Iowa??

khutch I'm from chicago area too (aurora) but I'm a trail rider... what is the tour of iowa? I'm interested in finding some weekend wars to fight.
also, I am not a train rider but always wondered if there was the ability to bring your bike, looks like you are saying you can if it is not rush hour? can you elaborate a little? thanks!
