For me, the crankset seemed to be the tricky part. If you can find a crankset that works with your existing bottom bracket, you're golden. I was able to find a 1x GXP crankset last year when I converted my full suspension bike but was unable to find one for this conversion so I had to buy a new crankset and bottom bracket. If your current bottom bracket is square taper, you can get a compatible 1x crankset on Ebay/Amazon for cheap!

Other than that, the 11-48 cassette fits onto the old-school Shimano HG freehub and everything else (derailleur and shifter) bolts right on. By following this video, it was easy peasy!

I gotta do some proper mountain biking this weekend but so far, so good. Here's roughly what I paid for this conversion.

Crankset and bottom bracket $74
Shifter $34
Cassette (all steel) $41
Derailleur $65
Chain $18
Total $232

Thanks!

Gotta go back and check to see what kind of BB I have on that bike. Been a bit since I wrenched on that one. Probably square taper

1. It's super weird to encounter drop bars and full face helmets on the same trail.

2. Gravel bikes are super popular in SoCal and apparently, you have to ride them in groups of 4 or more and must have some sort of handlebar bag.

3. The Microshift Avent X worked beautifully. The 48t granny gear was sufficiently granny and for some reason, I was in my high gear way more than my full suspension, even though they have the same high gearing.

4. It's fun to get downhill Strava PRs on your hardtail!

5. Mustard season has arrived on SoCal. Soon, they'll be overhead.

Very nice, @elgecko! I love those kind of rides, space and nature everywhere you look!

Nowadays I don't do that, requires driving to the spot, and I don't want to spend a whole weekend morning away from the kids, I spend little time with them already.

Did a good ride today, short but very nice, 30km.

Discovered some new tracks around the fields in my area.

Took an artistic photo of myself pretending to be contemplating the horizon:

And a couple more, describing the various terrains I cover with my bike. Road, pavet, compacted sand, double and single tracks.

I actually ride to this spot from my house sometimes but it's a 70 km + adventure.

I'll join in this discussion. I have a Specialized Roubaix road bike. Actually, my first road bike ever. I had a Specialized FatBoy prior to this bike. (Still love fat bikes.)
Bought this June 2020. Shortly thereafter, i bought a Wahoo Kickr rear-wheel trainer so I could ride inside. Heard about everyone Zwifting so I tried that. Wow! So much fun riding in the Zwift app, that I felt I was going to wear out my bike chain, etc. Bought a Wahoo Kick Bike and sold the rear-wheel trainer. Now, I have joined a racing team (Team CLS based out of the UK but I race with their USA teams) and Season 3 just started in the WTRL Racing/Zwift Racing League. Wish I had done this years ago when it first took off. Crazy, crazy fun and competitive!

I put this bike together last year because I wanted something quick and light compared to my 54 lb. touring bike but only started riding it a lot these past few weeks. I rode 11, 17, and 22 miles and I love this bike! It's just what I was aiming for. The 1x drivetrain is handy and quick and the ergonomics are just right. It's a great bike.

Old Snake Rode above Martinez and the Benicia Bridge..

At the River in front of The Forester hull. The captain ran her aground and lived aboard until a fire burned to the waterline.

NBD!

My foray into proper road bikes with drop bars is officially over. I picked up an OG gravel bike (AKA an old school full rigid MTB) from the original owner, who turned it into a hybrid/city bike. My inner mountain biker could never groove with the hunched over, bent neck posture of a road bike and I always felt like my head was buried when riding in traffic. Also, I'm not "fast" and speed isn't really a prime driver in my rides. I need to tweak the cockpit a bit and am probably gonna install a 1x drivetrain to drop weight and simplify. Also the original owner swapped a V brake brifter onto cantilever brakes so I'll probably switch over to V brakes.

Not at all techy but hands down, the most profoundly sublime place I've ever ridden a bicycle.

Wow! What a spot. Yosemite, presumably?

Great evening light with fog creeping in last evening. I just cleaned the exceptionally difficult climb to the top for the first time so I was pretty stoked. There's a steep, tight, narrow switchback with lots of exposure. If you fall right you're going to have a bad time. :D It's been giving me trouble for years and I finally unlocked it. I think the oval chainring I just installed helped.

Yosemite indeed. Nice pics! Cleaning new sections is always nice!

It's been more than 40 years since I've been to Newfoundland. There were no mountain bike trails! My family took a couple of camping trips in the maritime provinces. I remember riding on the CN ferry, and eating a lot of seafood, which you could buy directly from the fishermen on the wharf, just had to keep track of the tides.

Here's a youtube video cued up to the climb I mentioned (not me riding). Also the descent which suffers from serious go-pro effect. :D

I can do all the rest of it pretty much 100% but the move at around 1:45 has been my nemesis for years.

Nice! Great soundtrack as well. Yep - technical climbs with swithback....that's a tough one. Although on rock - ultimate traction, right? Not like the mud and roots we have here.....;-)
