Basses that just work with _____ genre!

I always thought a death metal band with all them playing hello kitty basses and guitars (properly modded, natch) would be total cool. Especially when you start the set where you beat a few smaller animals to death with them...

(ahem... simulated animal abuse, natch. Want no actual animals harmed in the production of your, um, music) ;)

I once caught an ENORMOUS load of crap from Blues Nazis for taking my fretless Alembic 6 string to a blues gig. The odd thing was that bass really worked out well with the music. But even I had to admit the look was TOTALLY "wrong". If only they'd have grabbed a large checkered tablecloth and thrown it over me and my bass it probably would have been fine! :D

Why do people listen to music with their eyes???

:hmm:

Play the bass that works for YOU as a player, not for someone else's pre-concieved aesthetic prejudice.

If a beat to crap 12 year old Fender MIM P does it for you, FANTASTIC. However, if a $100,000 Ritter is the instrument that gets the job done for you, then use the damned thing, and **** 'em if they can't deal.

Generally I would agree, but there are times when you need the LOOK also. And if you don't get with the program, you don't get the gig. Sad but true.

I dont know about sad, live performance of contemporary music is both an aural and visual experience. The term stage presence exists for a reason. If a band lacks a cohesive visual image it becomes more difficult to market , book etc. Imagine a jazz trio in which the bassist uses a BC Rich beast! It would be funny but the promo package would look ridiculous and bookings would suffer. By the same token a punk bassist with a 6 string fretless "furniture" bass would look out of sync stylistically .

I think a musician has got to know what tool to use and when. And above all, use good judgement and common sense. Most people know better to show up in church on Sunday morning looking like they just stepped off center stage at the local stripper club :) notice I said MOST:D. Using good judgment will get you where you want to go faster than the __em all! I'll do what I want too! attitude (generally speaking)
