Yeah, I wish we had the wisdom we have now projected to when we were kids. The shiny new Westone has 2 pickups so had to be better than the PB type single pickup right? . Anyway no use crying over split milk, If we regretted everything we'd done in our lives then life wouldn't be worth living going forward. It was a means to an end.
And you are right about the shape, simple, but so pleasing to the eye.

i never know what to say in these threads except, "i don't miss 'em --- i was glad i had them then, i was crazy about the instruments i had at that moment --- but i finished my business with them and moved on...no regrets...!"

there is no EB i wish i still had. OTOH, i'd feel terrible if i lost a couple that i have now: i'm not done with them yet.

am i lucky? am i missing something?

I bought a white jazz bass on here (Warmoth?) around 2012-13 and sold it here a year or so later. In retrospect, that thing sounded amazing and I should have never sold it. Sigh.

Edit - found the listing from 2013!

Purchased from bassdude51 - "a vintage white Fender MIJ body with Fender CS 60s pickups, all Fender MIA vintage hardware.

Neck is a MIJ Allparts bass neck with 1 5/8' nut, exactly half way in between a J and a P. Gotoh vintage reverse tuners that lay flush onto the back side of the headstock (unlike the AVRI tuners that are bulged). An aftermarket decal."

This guy... My first good bass, a 1982 4001S. Serial VE1277. These photos were taken from an ebay auction a few years back. I would be interested in buying it back if I had the chance.

Bass "I won’t miss" :

Obviously, most of us did that same mistake and let go some nice sounding basses……..

But I won’t repeat that same mistake again ! Below is my cheap Squier Afinity jazz bass I paid $ 300.00 and onto which I just installed a MIM Fender roasted maple jazz neck. This little cheap bass sounds so good, almost can’t believe it !

it’s kind of frustrating cause I have other basses that are worth 5 times the price of this one but sound okay compared to this Squier.

Again yesterday, playing in front of a bunch of people, I got compliments about how good it sounded so it’s not just me !

The toaster and the horseshoe, along with the black pg and trc were added by somebody after me. It was mostly stock when I sold it except that I had replaced the Ric high gains with Barts. I have to admit that I like the mods they did...very tasteful and a unique look. I probably would have done something like that myself eventually.

I'm always up for budget basses that sound 9/10ths of a bass that's 3 times or more the price. Sometimes 'I think Emperors new clothes' for these $3k - $4k basses. I've not had a Squier yet but I've been considering the Affinity Jag and dropping a Tbird pup in. Purely for scientific reasons of course..

You and me both mate. Finished doing manual work 30 years ago and got a desk job, even running doesn't shake it but it might just be the beer Your band looked interesting, the fronts person looks like Nancy Spungen but the rest of you all have hair. What sort of music was you playin back then?

I wish I’d kept my Squier VM Telecaster Bass. The 32” scale was cool, and talk about a conversation starter bass!

The bass I miss most, though, would be my upright bass. It wasn’t anything special, but it sounded good and I had a lot of good times playing that bass. Can’t really justify buying one these days, and don’t have the space for one if I did.

1965 L-serial Jazz Bass and a mid-'90s sunburst MIJ Fender Bass VI. I had those long before smartphone cameras.

Your band looked interesting, the fronts person looks like Nancy Spungen but the rest of you all have hair. What sort of music was you playin back then?

That was a band called Kidd Blitz. 80's rock & pop covers. Traveled around the western U.S. in a converted school bus, playing week-long stints in bars. The gal in front is the best singer I've ever worked with--terrific vocalist and showperson, very influenced by Ann Wilson of Heart. We're still in touch and she lives in Reno, Nevada nowadays singing in a popular classic rock band at casinos. The guitarist, on the other hand, was a tragic story: serious substance abuse and mental health issues--which ultimately caused me to leave the band. He is no longer alive. I lost touch with the other two guys (drummer and keyboardist).

Way back I had a killer Tokai Hardpuncher that I let go. I thought the neck was too much of a baseball bat (plus in the back of mind I wanted a P that said "Fender" on it). Now I have several P's not all Fender, and I like beefy necks!

Here's another "pointy-ass bass" I used to play. Worked a full-time job in the Summer of '79, when I was 15, to buy it (for $385.00!). When I was 18 it was stolen. 30 years later I found it in a music store and bought it back. That gave me "closure" but by then I didn't have much use for it tonally or ergonomically so I eventually traded it for a Stingray.

Got my first real four-string...bought it at the Five & Dime. Played it 'til my fingers bled...it was the summer of seventy nine...

I hear you. One of the best bands I played in the guitarist was mustard, and a really good friend. The band played soul/funk and he added the heavy metal guitar but with Wah , TBH we had a lot of interest until we imploded due to the singer bringing in his girlfiend and after that...well. She was OK but we lost our way. I caught up with our guitarist about 10 years ago on FB after a 25 year hiatus, he was mainlining living up in Newcastle, I lost contact with him a couple of days after that. Never heard from him again, and was told a couple of years later he OD'd about the time I was in contact. Sad, sad, when I knew him he was so lovely and intelligent and that's the last thing you'd ever have thought. I still listen to a few of our tapes from back then and, yeah, sort of makes you wonder but for the grace of God.
