some older peavey us basses came in a mahogany (foundation, patriot, etc) and there were also some koa models coming out of us peavey in the 90s, mostly unity series and dyna unity series basses.

i have an ash ibanez blazer p bass copy, in "traditional violin" finish, and it is beautiful, dark cherry inside, but shines brilliantly in daylight

Those old Ibanez' from the late 70's - mid 80's had a nice finish like that.

Find a Matsumoku Vantage. They're cheap.

Also, the Squiers still go for under $200 used, if you can find them.
The Peavey Grind series are a nice colour, too.

Other than the pirate touches and no board markers, I like it.A lot.

Here's one of my more recent acquisitions. It's a 1985 Peavey Patriot in the optional Mahogany finish. I found it online at a Guitar Center in Syracuse, NY for only $99.95!

It's the dark red one in the middle........

Very true. Ebay often has one or the other every now and then. Not too long ago Guitar Center's used database had a five-string Precision in the same color.

I've wanted one for a couple of years now, so I recently bought the Jazz bass version as a birthday present to myself. Izz verra nizzze! I plan on modding the crap out of it, starting with the electronics. Not that there's anything wrong with it's stock electronics, but I'm feeling…experimental, and I want to use it to explore different configurations. Specifically, I want to see how a Master-Volume/Blend/TBX-Tone-Circuit config works with an SD Quarter Pounder (neck) and a Hot (bridge) pickup go together. Wish me luck!

Walnut stain can never compete with real Walnut wood.
