Bassist/Singers?

Does anyone know of any well known bassist/singers? The only one I can recall at the moment is Les Claypool, of corse, but I was wondering how many there are. I've tried singing while playing bass, and it's hard as hell to do... er, i mean do WELL.

Listen to Avishai Cohen in his new release "Aurora"....he's dabbled before....he's getting more into it now.

Interestingly enough, I found myself asking this same question a few months back when I wanted to start learning how to sing while playing. I went to my father-in-law who is an honest to God music info guru (at least up till the late 80's/early 90's) and we came up with this list together. Note - this list doesn't respect whether a bassist is really the primary singer - sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't.

Paul McCartney - The Beatles, Wings, Solo
Jack Bruce - Cream
John Lodge - Moody Blues
Tom Evans - Badfinger
Greg Lake - E.L.P., King Crimson, Solo
John Entwhistle (only on occasion) - The Who, Solo
Sting - The Police, Solo
Tom Robinson - Tom Robinson Band
Nick Lowe - Rockpile, Brynsley Schwartz, Solo
Frank Allen (mostly backing vocals, but some leads) - The Searchers
Graham Gorldman - 10CC, Mockingbirds
Phil Lynott - Thin Lizzy
Chris White (again, mostly harmony) - The Zombies
Gene Simmons - Kiss
Les Claypool - Primus, Oysterhead, etc.
Geddy Lee - Rush
Brian Wilson - The Beach Boys
Louis Johnson - The Brothers Johnson
Chris Hillman - The Byrds
John Wetton - Asia
C.F. Turner - Bachman Turner Overdrive
Dusty Hill (once more, he only has lead vocals on some songs) - ZZ Top

Hope this helps. :) I know that this thread is very helpful to me since it's still an interest of mine. :bassist:

I think these threads always start with the question, spoken or unspoken: Should I not bother trying/ do I have an excuse for not trying to sing while I play? Nope. For most people it doesn't come any more naturally than just playing did the first time you picked up a bass. Interesting that we're all prepared to bore the family, exasperate the neighbors and scare the dog taking years to learn to play, but five or ten minutes of trying to sing and we're ready to give it up. Wish I'd gotten serious about it years earlier. Thanks for letting me share, and you may continue listing now.
