No need to bash Cliff just because most people think he's better than Jason. I think all Metallica bassist ('cept for Ron Mcgovney) have all been really good at what they do! And those two songs you just mentioned, they happen to be 2 of my favorite Metallica songs aswell :)

Also, I'd like to stand up for Gene Simmons. His basslines are really fun to play, and I think people are being a little tough on him. I mean, c'mon, in KISS what else could he do? play roots? now that would be freakin' boring, I admire Gene's playing.

I always stick up for Jaco. You get the usual run of "I don't like Jaco, and I don't care!" type folks who are happy just to plod along with 8th notes on the root for the rest of their lives. But Jaco changed so much for us bassists, he was a good man at heart and had a lot of friends. I'll always be the first to defend his legacy and his music, because he is a legend.

Yeah, I know.

But I've also stuck up for Sheehan, Burton, and Jaco occasionally. And, strangely enough, Paul D'amour. I don't understand why there's so much chancellor worship and D'amour hate, he's a really great bassist and songwriter. :/

Well I used to not like him that much because it seemed like he followed guitar too much, but then I found out the guitar was following him because he wrote so much of the music.

I like Chancellor's style a little bit more, but I find it annoying when someone is like, "Well, I speak for all tool fans when I say Paul was ok, but Chancellor is the best thing that ever happened to Tool."

Plus I've been listening to Feersum Ennjin lately. ;)

Oh, and I have had to defend myself from a person who said I sucked, but that person couldn't even tune to drop-D when he tried to do a cover of his own. But not much besides that.

i stick up for bass haha
most of my friedns like to get my goat by saying bass isnt an instrument and i say haha thats funny and i ask them to site read a song or something and tehy are like.... and drool from the side of their mouths

Never defend yourself against people who say you suck. Number one, you shouldn't have to. Number two, for every bassist who does great things, there is always someone who will say he/she sucks. I've heard it about everyone from Jamerson to Wooten. Someone thinks you suck...OK then...not the end of the world, and it doesn't prevent you from pursuing playing. So pay the critics no heed and don't even dignify them with a response.

b) is pretty 'showy' on stage
c) is a Scientologist
d) that unfortunate youtube interview with him defending Scientology,

Ive met him and he was the most humble guy who shouted me a beer and gave me a few tips on technique and how/why he does what he does. Not up himself at all and a genuinely good person.

Stu Hamm's a top guy too. Funny as hell and again, very open in sharing a few of his secrets!

Totally agree. I've met both, and seen them play a couple of times, and they were very humble and happy to answer questions. They both are also not just "showy", but fit very well into the context of any record that I've heard them on
