Man, I like how many ppl are hating on Pete Wentz...we should totally (i mean this seriously) make a Pete Wentz Haters Club lol. He music sucks IMO, but on a personal level he's annoying as well?

I stick up for Tom T-Bone Wolk. (SNL and Hall & Oates) A couple of my friends mimic the bass up in your underarm position, and kid me about it, 'cause they know I like the guy. Of course this is coming from a keyboard dude who has all the Bob James albums (even the smooth jazz snoozefest/"musical wheat toast" ones...), so what does he know...

I think that the guy's a solid player, comes up with some really funky lines that make the band's music work...and gets slagged or just plain left out way too much.
He inspired me to become a bass player and he makes great music....both those things have made me happy for a long time...so anytime i can give him some 'props, I will.

Today I'm gonna get the back of Mr. Dave Allen, who played for Gang of Four and Shriekback as well as a couple of other, later bands.
It's not that I hear people rag on him; but he just doesn't get the acknowledgement he deserves. If you listen to the first two Gang of Four albums (and you should) or the early Shriekback stuff, his lines are just monstrous and slinky and sinister and are definitely the engine that drives the song, but he does it without being flashy or shreddy at all.
Shriekback actually had a song called "My Spine is the Bassline" which is one of their cheesier songs from a lyrical perspective, but it nails Allen's place and influence in the groups he was in.
Another player I'll mention is Dee Dee Ramone. I do this in part because there are many uniformed music fans who dismiss anything smacking of punk rock without knowing what they are talking about, or without having an understanding of just how wide and varied punk was and how large its influence has been.
Sure, Dee Dee was just a caveman 4-bangin' root guy, but he was rock solid as an avalanche. And having played bass at a couple of Ramones tribute shows, I can tell you, doing what he did and keeping up that pace for the length of one of their concerts is no mean feat.

See my sig. But yeah, the usual suspects are already listed. I'll take up for Gene, Kip, Cliff Williams, Ian Hill, Dusty Hill, Adam Clayton, and even Pete Wentz. All day, every day. One doesn't have to be a Wooten to be good, and I always have the back of the Root Note Brigade.
I had a pal once who used to rag on my love for power pop/hair metal/whatever for its simplicity. I asked him if he really, really thought that a composition's worth was directly proportional to its complexity. He looked me in the eye and said, "YES!"

Ditto on Billy Sheehan.
Ive heard plenty of flack served to him because he;
a) was in Mr Big
b) is pretty 'showy' on stage
c) is a Scientologist
d) that unfortunate youtube interview with him defending Scientology,
Ive met him and he was the most humble guy who shouted me a beer and gave me a few tips on technique and how/why he does what he does. Not up himself at all and a genuinely good person.
Stu Hamm's a top guy too. Funny as hell and again, very open in sharing a few of his secrets!

Agreed totally. Everyone sucks off Cliff Burton and hates on Newstead. The God that Failed and My Friend of Misery are two great basslines that prove Newstead is a very good player.
Bill Wyman. I can be found in pretty much every post discussing his playing, defending/trying to explain his uniqueness to those who don't "get it". Many widdly-woo fancypants chopsmeisters don't seem to understand his command of the groove and feel(and likewise, they can never approach how he played).

when I go on youtube or something looking at videos of him theres always people putting him down you know?
Personally I love him, I think hes very funky and the chilis just wouldnt be the chilis without him.

the most "hated" bassist is newstead hands down
funny thing is that newstead sound pretty damn awesome in his other projects, and with metallica , well he did what he could with the egos in there.

He frequently gets thrashed here, and I can't figure out why. His bass lines are a riot, and you have to credit him with bringing bass to the masses.
