bassists who don't like jaco

The first time I heard Jaco (about 5 years ago) , I didn't get it. I just didn't see what the big deal was; sounded like any other fretless player.
Then I realized that, when put into context of the time he was playing; no one had done anything like that before. Yeah, today everyone sounds and plays like that; but back then? All Jaco. Genius.

To like a bassist or not, is all subjective?
Geddy Lee does nothing for me.
Same for Cliff Burton, I just never conected with them.
If you like Jaco fine.
It's all personal tast.

Half of what you know is electric bass today is because of the guy, the other half is because of James Jamerson.

I think you might want to at least acknowledge Larry Graham. More than a few folks slap on the bass guitar. For the record, I am a great admirer of Jaco.:)

I was gonna mention Larry too, but I didn't want to drag it out. I think if you had to name the top 3 influential electic bassists, it would be Jamerson, Pastorius, and Graham.

4. Gotta mention Monk Montgomery even having the balls to gig with the thing in the beginning, and Count Basie for convincing him to do so. ;)

I've said it before and i'll say it again, it is not possible to understand jaco's genius without knowing some theory, because half of his phrasings and counter melodies will go straight over the listener's head.

hell, they still go over my head at times, but because i am studying the theory of music, i can begin to grasp what jaco was doing.

I would suggest taking a little more nuanced view of the history of the instrument--after all, this is a form of artistic expression we're talking about. You really can't take old guys and new guys, line 'em up against the wall and say "Good, Good, Bad, Good". You gotta look at context.

Take fine art and painting, for example. I hate Cubism. Picasso's work makes me nervous and unhappy. But, AT THE TIME HE CAME ALONG, he did something new in the art world. He made a bold claim that it was possible to paint something from every direction at once. And everybody said "Hey, that's a new idea! Maybe we ARE being a little slavishly devoted to old ways of doing things and can try to expand in some new directions! Let's try it out." And off everybody went refreshed and energized to make new art.

Jaco was like that. He was a brilliant musician who brought an original approach to music into the world. I don't think either Jaco or Picasso would demand you like their art. I DO think they (and any other true artist) will expect you to respect their ability to express themselves AND they would want to see what you bring to the table.

What do YOU bring to the table? Have you got a style that a musician like Jaco (or Marcus) can relate to as your own voice? What THEIR music sounds like is, in large part, irrelevant.

First of all let me say that im not a troll. I seriously cant see whats so great about this guy...im not sayin hes crap or what but yea. But then again Ive just started playin bass so I prolly have crappy ears and dont have much grasp on techniques and stuff

Once again, let me say that I dont mean to offend anyone. Maybe, Ill be enlightened someday and realise how good that guy was....but in the meantime i have no clue...so if anyone can explain then its cool
