Double Bass Bassmax Ringing

I installed a used Bassmax, and it's making a high pitched "ringing" sound, towards the end or after of the note. Otherwise it sounds good.

Did I botch the installation? Is the Bassmax busted?

Please help.

Sounds like feed back due to resonance. Is it worse with some strings more than others? Make sure the pick up isn't too loose or too tight. Too loose definately causes ghost tones and too tight can damage the pick up. It should be snug and require a bit of pressure to install or remove. If the rubber on the pick up is getting scraped or torn, it's too tight. If the pick up comes out during normal use or if you can push it out with slight pressure from one finger, it's too loose. The K&K website has instructions on installation that are pretty user friendly.

Try muting the afterlengths of the strings. Other than that, what kind of amp are you using? Does the impedence match up? Is there a phase reversal or a HP filter? I have use Bassmax in the past and it often takes some messing with to get it right.

Thanks for the response. I don't think it's too tight or too loose. I filed the bridge wing until it was difficult to insert, then filed it a llittle more. So it comes in and out with a little pressure.

I'm running it through the HPF-Pre into Ashdown Mag 300. I'll try muting the afterlength.

I once got a new end pin, and the portion of the peg normally reserved for people who are 7 feet tall would resonate with certain notes and cause a buzz that was most prominent through my amp. A hacksaw took care of the problem.

I had a drummer once who made a high pitched whining sound after every note I played....


A hacksaw took care of that problem, too.

Would you mind posting photos of your afterlength dampner? I did a quick search and there's some good instruction, but very few photos.

People seem to be using a wide variety of material: foam, velcro, leather, rubber, vinyl, etc...

I use black rubber tubing used for carburater vacuum hoses. Cheap and flexible. Just weave it between all the strings and keep it snug, then tie it in a granny knot. Also wedge a tennis ball between the tailpiece and the bass body, very helpful.

I use a piece of double-sided velcro about 3/4" wide. I wrap it around the strings and then slide a bit toward the bridge for a snug fit. Sorry...no pics.

I just wrapped some velcro around the strings. I used to use black duct tape; didn't look pretty but it worked. It doesn't take too much to dampen the after length.

BTW: We're not brilliant; we just suffered through the same thing at one time.
