Batman....again

Similar to soooooo many movie trailers and TV promos that include the re-makes of classic rock and pop tunes.

Hey, young execs in Hollywood -- what happened? You all out of ideas? No more good superheroes? No great tunes being written today? Regardless, you go back to the well of ideas from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s over and over... to a time when truly creative minds came up with great comic book characters, wrote great tunes, made good television and put together fantastic movies.

This is really sad. People picking on Batman. Really? This guy in various formats was a major thing when most of the folks here were just a “gleam”, read between the lines. Sure like those early P Basses do ya’. Respect for one, and not another. What a disappointment.

Appealing to whom? How to explain this? Hollywooden desperation? Water for Elephantitis? The bat's the elephant in the broom closet? Mythologicing on the cake? Bane of our existentialism? Batmantra? Comic relief? Try-hardiness? Gotham by the short 'n' curlys?

I've never understood why actors say things like this.

Why'd he even do the movies if he felt this way about them "from day one"? Was he contractually obligated? Did he not have the integrity to turn down the part because he knew it would make him a big star and earn him a whole lot of money? Or was he just too young to know better?

Anyway...I think it's bad form to trash something that made you so successful, especially if you willingly took part in it.

Millions and millions of dollars are excellent motivators. He had only really done a relatively small role in Harry Potter before as far as I know. When he started the work on it he had no idea what the end product would look like. And let's not forget the millions and millions of dollars. I'm sure he was contractually obligated. All the books existed when the first movie was made, I think. I'd think it would be bad form if he spoke positively about the experience afterwards. I respect the honesty. He didn't say the movies were garbage. He gave his opinion in a snarky way at worst.

Is it that much different from being a musician? You need the money and take some gigs where you're not 100% into the music, but it pays the bills. Then afterwards if you get to join a cooler band you might want to distance yourself from the earlier gig. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, because yeah it does seem kind of rude and unprofessional to bad mouth a previous job in public...just wondering if that is the thought process behind what he said.

For me, it seems too much like having his cake and eating it, too...participating in a franchise that made him rich and famous, then denigrating it to help build his status as a serious actor.

I don't think that was his motivation at all. These interviews were at press junkets where he's sitting there for hours at a time being asked the same questions over and over again. Fatigue and repetition will bring out the truth in you. When he criticized the movies, and I can't read minds over youtube, but it really didn't seem like he was trying to bolster himself as a serious actor by talking smack. The twilight movies are trash. He's a talented actor. Different strokes for different folks, but I respect him more for being honest and biting the hand that fed than if he had lied and said it was great.

The Twilight movies are in his rear view mirror. He’s older and wiser and successful and wealthier now. Nothing wrong with looking back and reflecting that maybe they weren’t really very good. Countless actors, musicians, etc have done similar.

Harrison Ford has said Star Wars was ridiculous and the dialog made no sense to him at the time.

I do wonder if he had anything positive to say about the experience, like maybe he thought the cast and crew did a good job, or maybe he had some fun making the movies. I haven't seen or read his interviews regarding "Twilight," but it would be hard to believe that his experience was all negative. Positive reflections can be just as honest as negative ones.

Then again, maybe he really didn't like anything about it...

I read and understand your points. I just kind of see it as "Well that's what celebrities do sometimes." They express a little regret at something they kind of had to do to achieve career success. ;)
