Im looking into a new bass after i checked off a new amp on my gas list... now im looking for a $400- bass that is unbeatable at the price... i play metal, prog, rock, classic, neoclassic, avant-garde, and funk. i have a few contenders but i am open to suggestions.... out of the 4, your opinion of the best in quality, beauty, and tone.

Squier VM jazz
Warwick Rockbass streamer lx....(good prices used)
Dean edge 4 fretless

My choice would probably be between Squier CV jazz and yamaha bb414/424. I briefly had the VM jazz which was a nice instrument for the money, but CV sounds better to my ears. Fuller and warmer. And the yamaha.. I've tried to sell my 414 many times since it's the "cheap beater" but damn, it just too nice to have it around.

Any Squier Classic Vibe Series bass will delight you, I suspect. I love the 60s Jazz and the 60s P. The play and sound amazing and are very reasonably priced.

I would get one of the CV Squier. Or for about $500 you could find a used Lakland 55-01 with some luck. Great instrument.

Warcwick Rockbass basses are fun and have a very diverse tone to them. That have big necks if I remember correctly.

Used Epiphone T-Bird Pro should get you most of your list imo. Maybe a used SBMM Ray34?

one; i will probably never get a yamaha or epi tbird because they are as ugly and stiff as heck.... two; Squier CV jazz vs. Squier VM jazz...which wins for a deep, beefy, metal/rock tone?... three...im looking for a metal bass basically. no sharp edges allowed though

Out of the four - Ibanez SR (quality, sound, neck, weight, and looks, but that's me), but maybe you should check the TB classifieds, and your local GC / music stores.

I like the SR out of the list. In that range don't over look peavey. Very overlooked and versitile basses. Might even find a used Cirrus.

A good guitar technician can set up almost anything with four strings to play decently; a good player can take that same instrument and make it sound at least passable. The trick is acquiring the best sounding/looking/playing instrument that meets your budgetary and musical requirements.

The Ibanez SR300 would be my diff pick of those. I'd also suggest you check out ESP Ltd B154dx & F154dx along with maybe Traben array series.

There is a little known gem on E-Bay for the next 2 hours 18 minutes......5 String Fender MB5. Current price $200. GREAT bass ....prob. mid '90s.....Japanese built. Unconventional headstock for a Fender. I have one or the E-bay MB5 would be mine. This bass is incredible sounding, built well, cheap, and very importantly.....mine only weighs in at 8 lbs. I've been playing out quite abit lately.....the Ric, '73 Jazz, '77 P, Anniv. MusicMan 5 and the Spector Rebop all stay home. The MB5 is one sweet package.......Buddy
