Battling neck dive on an Epiphone EB-3

I have always been a Fender player and still have four; however, I picked up an EB3 locally as a 'beater" bass for all our outdoor rainy gigs in FL and have been playing it quite a bit. Last night I played it for three hour-long sets without discomfort. Yes, the neck dives. My solution? I use a 4" Clayton strap (about $20 at MF) with a rough underside and play it at a forty-five degree angle. I am 5'9", 165, and 65 years old. I honestly can't see what the problem with this is. Keep your left hand on the neck and find the sweet angle and it is all good--at least to me. Now, when I'm older maybe the 10 lbs. and neck dive will bother me, who knows? Also, the dark, bass-heavy tone is made more versatile with D'Addario Pro Steels. One other criticism I have heard is that the E string can be weak. Raise the pole piece in the big pickup beneath the E and that becomes a non-issue. Just my experience.

Now that's a slick professional addition!

Great ! I knew somebody would find the info. I love EB style basses and have been sorely tempted to get the Epi EB-3 for a long time. I have a Gibson SG and love the dang thing.
For me, neck dive has never bothered me but I have short arms, super max out to first position on short horn long scales. I like the Steinberger arm, maybe my GAS will be pushed over the edge now !

I'm glad I bought mine; I did put the Hipshot Supertone bridge on (super-easy drop-in) mine. They're really inexpensive for a lot of bass.

So this happened and it works. I think I might have a one of a kind modification here (lol).

Hahahahahaha!!!! I have a Gibson EB-3 and you get used to the dive, I bought a nice 3" leather strap and it works fine. It's still there but I don't even think of it anymore. I also put a Supertone bridge on mine, nice to be able to intonate each string.

Yes, a well-made wide strap will minimize slippage....unless the shirt beneath decides to go along for the ride which it frequently does. My problem is the weight distribution or lack thereof. I like the same "pull" at the right flank as I do at the left shoulder. May not be an issue for some but I find it particularly bothersome. When folding that aspect into the equation, the only effective method of correcting that anomaly is to relocate the fulcrum or upper strap attachment closer to the 12th fret. The impaled wrench is a novel idea but not a huge departure from previous designs. We're all familar with the Steinberger extender but the NS Bolin used a similar "plant hanger" approach (attached below). IIRC, the guys in lynyrd skynyrd made similar modifications as they were all "clipped in the left wing" in the horrendous plane crash.

Here's my way of combating head dive, I'm having an SG style body made for my Rondo Hadean 21" bass uke that's going to be bigger than the original body so it balances better. I did that on a Rondo into a Hofner violin style that worked very well. I also use straps that are rough suede on the inside.

I think the Gibson's are shortscale (30.5") which should make any diving a bit more manageable (never had the opportunity to try one myself). The Epiphone EB-3 is 34" and comes standard with headstock right to the floor neck dive.
