Does anyone know if the Warlock Bass is any good?

My father claims it couldn't possibly produce a good sound cause if it's different shape.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The shape of a solidbody electric bass is pretty much irrelevant to how it'll sound. The pickups and/or electronics are the main contributor, with the neck and body woods adding some tonal shading.

No comment on whether the BCR is any good, as I've never played one, but I'd like one of the vintage USA models.

They have made some nice Warlocks in the custom shop, although as another guy stated, the body will not have much effect on sound. It's not a comfortable bass, though. The BC Rich shapes work really well on guitar, but end up really heavy and unbalanced on basses.

I haven't played one of the new Warlocks, but I have played a new Mockingbird and if they're similar, I wouldn't be impressed. Having owned a US model Warlock Supreme and a 80's NJ series, I can tell you I wouldn't buy one of the new ones unless it was a custom shop model.

And I have to add, on a humourous note, that if you're short these basses are nearly impossible to play. I'm 5'2" and can't reach the first fret! No lie! Rest of the band busted a gut watching me try one that belonged to my guitarist.

I am a HUGE BC Rich nut! If you are talking about Korean (NJ, Platinum, Bronze) then there is no difference between them and the Wal-Mart brand.

However, if you are talking about an American then they are incredible. Look for an early build date (1982-1989) or a late build date (1995-2000). Those eras are the best production. Bolt-ons are nothing special but the original neck-throuughs are incredibly desired.

Oh, and the shape makes for a really comfortable play.

I honestly dislike all the BC Rich models I've tried, even the higher class ones

They sound like crap to my eyes and the shape of them don't do anything to help it

I own a platinum warlock (2006 model) and I can say it plays like a beast! People say they're only metal basses but I can do funky stuff on it too, it's quite versatile.

i'd go for a older NJ (1980's) MIJ if possible, or USA: you should be able to find a old MIJ bass on the cheap too!

I like them and the tone they produce, good playing position ect for me too (im 6"1)

^--I wouldn't like to sound like a jxxk but did you do it on purpose or did you put the strings around the tuning pegs(tuner post) wrongly?
The E and A string should normally be at the right side of the tuner post and the D-G strings at the left side.. But OK, it's not a written rule

It's not a written rule, but it does put a lot of stress on the ends of the nut. And it looks awkward.

00funk, that is a beauty. I've looked into the Warmoth Warlock bodies, but they just don't look right to me. They're not cut as crisp as the older Warlock Supreme bodies. The curve under the bridge should come to a sharp stop. Oh, don't mind all the blood. Just a little shaving accident.

as long as you get one thats a platinum or higher series... you'll be all set. the bronze series basses are sh!t, which makes people think that all BCR's are sh!t. I personally think that BCR's are amazing basses.

I love my NJ beast... its the best bass i own/have played. but, if i were to re-think the body style choice i made... i'd get a mockingbird... they are the best body shape that is currently in production.

The shape has little to do with the sound except for some reason flying V basses are not the best sounding basses , It was Gibson's worst sounding bass. I dont know of one V bass that everyone raves about it's sound?

My son had a platinum BC Rich Warlock with the double P Pups. I was surprised how well it sounded & played it was a nice bass. THe only downsides were it was pretty heavy and the widow headstock chips really easy. It was a very cool bass and a classic design in my opinion.

The other negitive is you better stick to rock or metal with it. You would get frowns in Jazz, Blues, situations.

overall a great bass for the money.

I'm relatively new to the bass guitar and am using my Dad's old (and I mean old!) Fender musicmaster bass. It doesn't play really well anymore and is starting to fall apart.
And yes I do plan on playing metal (and death metal).

Well, if you're playing metal, keep in mind that your bass doesn't necessarily have to be all spikey. Not implicating you currently think that way, but y'know....

Although the higher end Richs are nice they are, for the most part, about an image. Case in point are the current headstock designs. They chip way too easily and are just plain ugly. How I long for the old traditional and 4-inline headstocks.
