Beautiful: a Teal Kubicki!

Don't think I've even seen one that color, or with matching pickups. Is this a modern example? Customized for Johnny? Something he did himself?
The knobs don’t look stock. I think Johnny may have customized this bass. I think the Kubicki X Factor is one of the best bass designs ever. The built in D extension is wonderful for dedicated four string players who want to go a step deeper.

definatly mod'ed. The neck ramp is also painted, and the "Philip Kubicki California" text is missing, so its been resprayed and a new Kubicki logo made.

As noted electronics are changed. Pickups (apart from painting) look stock - or at least it's the original covers as you can just about see the shaping.

I was suppose to meet up with him last week to check this one and his black one with flames out. We're considering a swap for my '94 NS-4, but I've just got too much going in in my life right now to pull myself away to deal with it. I've got 5 Kubickis, including one in factory teal. Would love to add another. Life sets priorities for you from time to time no matter what your intentions are. This is one of those times.

Johnny does most of his own work, aside from having some enviable chops. A lot of his gear would go up on consignment at our Sam Ash over the years. I'm not really keen on the mods nor the refins, personally.

I had a factory baby blue one that looked like that. Sold it years and years ago. Still have not see another like it to this day.

The owner of the music store I sold it to stripped it to have it repainted for a customer that bought it from him. While removing the paint, he discovered a beautiful piece of wood, called the customer and told him he needed to come in and see it before painting over it. They ended up going with a natural finish.

In 2012, I started communicating with Phil about building me a new "Ferrari" red bass. I had no idea he was so ill at the time. We had several long conversations and a few email exchanges in which he kept telling me he had multiple incomplete basses that just needed to be painted, but kept trying to sell me completed ones in colors other than red. I had been saving for a Kubicki forever and just had to have that gorgeous red. I called one day and a lady that was either his girlfriend or wife answered informing me that Phil had passed, which shocked me.

Phil was not only super creative, he was super kind.

Here's a photo of mine... well...half of it. I sent the neck to Mike Haney a year or so ago to have the painted side markers replaced with inlays. He did a great job.

After seeing the “quality” of his refinishing work I wouldn’t let him even put strings on any of my basses.
