When my wife & I had an apartment in Boston, I bought an Ampeg BA108V2 (20 watts, 8' spkr). I pulled it out of storage recently and was pleasantly surprised by the sound of it. It delivers that Ampeg sound with plenty of volume for practice. To me it sounds better than the new GK 112 combo which seems boomy on the low end, tho not as boomy as the small V2 Fender combos.

I play with headphones 99% of the time and I am super happy with this headphone amp. It has a few decent effects built in too which has totally cured me of looking at pedals on craigslist. (It has way more guitar than bass amp models/fx but the bass side is serviceable.)

Had mine for 6+ years and it's still going strong. Got the battery pack (fits under the handle) and even did an outdoor gig with it (I put it inside a plastic storage bin turned sideways--rear porting works wonders). Well worth the money and the longest-lived piece of gear I have. Very easy to move around to jam with people (even with quiet drummers if you put it on the floor in a corner--I gigged it at the bar in my avatar in a pinch), aux in, headphones out, and line out to a powered cabinet if you want, and sounds very good at low volume.

Fender Bassman 25 - amazingly good sound

Fender BXR 25 - less middy, more bass, still great tone.

Ampeg B100R - vintage tone, gets louder than expected

GK MB200 and BagEnd 15" cab. This combination is awesome. The GK MB 200 is a great headphone amp and has an AUX IN. It's also a serviceable amp with a decent headroom and the GK tone that I've used and loved since the 80s.

I love small amps. I have a few others that I'm sure I'm overlooking...

I voted the PJ as they are neat, little amps. However, I've really been digging the Two Notes Le Bass preamp into their Torpedo C.A.B. M+ cabinet simulator with headphone output. Plenty of clear loudness and you don't bother anybody.

I was seriously considering a Boss Bass Micro Cube as a home practice amp since I keep my rig at the drummers basement (where the magic happens). Thought it'd be fun with the extra effects, etc. Ended up paying a bit more for this...

And SO glad I did! Tons of fun and an almost endless combination of effects, amp and cab models. Also very cool to stream your music to play with via bluetooth!

The Studio 40 is a big box of fun. Also its own USB interface. You can use the seven button pedal with it now. Fiddle with the knobs on your cell phone. What's not to like?

Tough to beat the Hartke HD25 for 129 bucks. Great fat and punchy tone, gets loud enough to shake the walls and has very good headphone sound and AUX in. Built rugged. Perfect bedroom amp (mine is in the living room).

I use my Zoom B1Xon on headphones, works great for quiet practicing, plus drum beats, and a looper. And playing with all the different fx can be loads of fun too.

when it died I was looking at one of these

but I ended up with one of these

which is gigable with jazz bands and has no problem with a 5 String.

Another vote here for the Genzler Magellan 350 BA10 combo. Super high quality and very light. I will be selling mine due to using a Kemper now with a Barefaced cab.

I own a Phil Jones Double Four BG-75. It's excellent. With a cab extension it can match a drum kit for volume. I also just ordered a Vox amPlug for portable headphone use around the house in the early morning.

I didn't know you can use a cab extension with the BG-75. How can I do that?

I use a little Fender Rumble 15, which I think sounds great. I would never use it for anything but a bedroom/office practice amp though.

I believe it would have to be a powered cab as all it has is a line out and headphone out.
