IMHO taking everything up an octave just makes the bass sound terrible. I would play it as a bass, where the bass sounds good.

take as much as you can up the octave as long as it doesn't sound crapy. My mate Vasilis Papavasilou did the Mendelssohn Octet second cello like this, but he also played the spring sonata on the bass!!??!
