Before my first build

Daerek... first off I'm behind you and hope you get the chance to make some sawdust soon.

Guys, I know where you're coming from and I think your warnings are warranted... but only to an extent. One warning is enough if you really want to help out. Repeating yourself time after time ends up looking more like mockery or something of a more selfish nature.

Thom, I can see your point about hanging back and observing but we are all different and handle things a different way. I can understand Daerek's M.O. because I too work things out from various angles, different perspectives and seemingly non-chronological order before I even get the chance to actively do anything. This process keeps the spark alive and allows me to successfully reach my goals once I do get the chance to get my hands dirty.

IMHO if anyone is tired of this thread and think it's going nowhere, then you have the option of passing it over. But to come here and pee in Daerek's pool and then tell him you're doing it for his benefit isn't very convincing.

I know the shape I want now.

That is a start. Have you committed it to paper?

I do, however, feel that you consistently criticize my planned build and this thread. You have also, directly and indirectly, stated that you expect me to fail. Even if you disapprove of what I want to do, or what I ask and reply, I would prefer if you don't post unless you have something constructive to say. I am in no way against constructive criticism, but I can find nothing constructive in your comments. If I am missing something, would you care to enlighten me?

Constructive criticism will begin when something is being constructed.

Sorry if this seems a little harsh, but I have let it go quite a few times already.

I appreciate bluntness.

Your first post in this thread, clearly stating that you don't think my first build will be great, or even good - that's OK, I don't expect my first build to be great either. But you should have stopped there. From this post alone, I understand that you disapprove of my spec choices for my first build.

There is more than myself that feel this way. You are headstrong into pursuing this path despite the guidance from those that are further and much further along the way from where you are now. The collective experience knows that your intentions are to squeeze coal to make a diamond. Those that are experienced are attempting to tell you that it takes time. Loads of it.

Insinuating I won't be able to do what I have planned. I interpret the "good luck" comment as sarcastic, correct me if I'm wrong.

That is a blunt comment informing you that failure to heed guidance from elders will set you on a path without assistance. Swim back before you are too far for anyone to save you.

You link to a build thread with rather advanced specs that died, insinuating that either my build will fail or I will abandon it.

There is no one in this forum that is rooting harder for you to prove me wrong than myself. Unfortunately the statistics are heavily favoring me.

This time quite obviously insinuating that my build will end up as a wreck.
Here is a directly related situation. I am hoping that you do not leave for Basic before you start. My expectations are that this thread will end in a similar manner. There is no one in this forum that is rooting harder for you to prove me wrong than myself.

And regarding the multiple insinuations that I have not actually read 156 pages of threads: I have not read every single thread. I have picked out threads that concerned neck-throughs, fanned-frets and ERBs, and a few others. And besides, I do not have photographic memory. I do not remember every thread I have read, and every topic I passed by.

The overwhelming majority of your inquisitions have been answered previously. You made the claim that the research has been completed and yet the main questions that you are posting are direct reiterations of not too distant conversations.

You also seem to insinuate that number of pages in a thread should indicate progress; it does not. Rather, it indicates the number of questions and replies. If I did not have any questions, the first post would have been filled with wood and sawdust and progress instead.

Yes. The library of information that is being compiled here increases in value with every build that is documented. There are many threads that educate me as to building techniques. The advice that is given for free, or for those of us that pay, is done so with the intention of your benefit and the benefit of future users.

If there is something essential regarding bass guitar building that I am missing, would someone please enlighten me, rather than trying to make me feel bad and abandon the project entirely? Or, if there is some other reason why you're trying to discourage me that has not already been clearly stated, I would really like to know.

You are clearly missing the building of basses part.

Sorry about the long post, I just think this has gone on for long enough. Someone less stubborn than I would probably have been discouraged and abandoned the idea of ever building an instrument long ago. And, our opinions may differ, I think that instrument building should be encouraged, not discouraged.

I appreciate your aspirational goals but many here have and will continue to caution you against the failure within your first build. Seeing such a spectacular failure will do more to discourage you than any character string on the internet will.

First of all, thanks to Rickett Customs and Thom Walker for stating their opinions in a clear manner. Your advice is taken. Actually, there is not a single point in your posts that I directly disagree with.

However, I have a tendency to jump into things, and so far the results of that have only been good, I joined a band on bass before I had ever played one, and now I'm a bassist.

I do realize that my first build might end up as a complete failure, but I am mentally prepared for that. If it turns out complete crap, I will think of it as an advanced and expensive practice build. Of course I will be disappointed, but not enough to not try again.

Daerek... first off I'm behind you and hope you get the chance to make some sawdust soon.
Thanks!

Guys, I know where you're coming from and I think your warnings are warranted... but only to an extent. One warning is enough if you really want to help out. Repeating yourself time after time ends up looking more like mockery or something of a more selfish nature.
This. This is what I have been trying to say. Of course it is a good thing to warn me, but once is enough.

Thom, I can see your point about hanging back and observing but we are all different and handle things a different way.
Hanging back and observing - I think I'll do just that for a while.
I can understand Daerek's M.O. because I too work things out from various angles, different perspectives and seemingly non-chronological order before I even get the chance to actively do anything. This process keeps the spark alive and allows me to successfully reach my goals once I do get the chance to get my hands dirty.
This is also a point of mine:
[If I don't ask about it now,] I would end up asking about it anyway, what's wrong with being a bit early with the questions? If I ask now, I'll have the answers when I need them, so I won't have to wait for answers when I'm about to start fretting. Doesn't that make sense?

IMHO if anyone is tired of this thread and think it's going nowhere, then you have the option of passing it over. But to come here and pee in Daerek's pool and then tell him you're doing it for his benefit isn't very convincing.
Also a good point, one I considered making earlier.

That is a start. Have you committed it to paper?
Not yet - hate me if you want.

Constructive criticism will begin when something is being constructed.
You missed the point. "Constructive criticism" is like normal criticism, while also including advice and suggestions for improvement.

I appreciate bluntness.
So do I.

As already stated, I'm not expecting to create a diamond. This will not be the best bass in the world. But it will be a bass built by me, for me. Or, in the worst case, it will be practice and experience for when I build my second. The point is, these are the specs I want in my bass, so they are what I will be trying to achieve.

That is a blunt comment informing you that failure to heed guidance from elders will set you on a path without assistance. Swim back before you are too far for anyone to save you.
If this build can't be saved, OK. I'll deal with that when/if it happens.

There is no one in this forum that is rooting harder for you to prove me wrong than myself. Unfortunately the statistics are heavily favoring me.
This is only my first build. You shouldn't expect miracles.

Here is a directly related situation. I am hoping that you do not leave for Basic before you start. My expectations are that this thread will end in a similar manner.
Sorry, what do you mean by 'Basic'?

The overwhelming majority of your inquisitions have been answered previously. You made the claim that the research has been completed and yet the main questions that you are posting are direct reiterations of not too distant conversations.
Sorry, I have a tendency to want confirmation of anything and everything, and I'm often not sure if what I read applies to my situation as well. I'll admit, most of the time I have nothing to worry about. Still, I do, and I can't help it. Again, sorry.

You are clearly missing the building of basses part.
That was really unnecessary. You don't think I want to start right away? I'll say this clearly: I want to start building as soon as possible. I don't yet have a place to build. Anything particularly unclear about that? And, I think I've said something like that before...

I don't have a place to build yet, I'm working on that. So it might be a while before I can actually start building.

As I said, I don't have a workshop yet, so it might be a while.

I can't wait either, but I have to... :(

As soon as I get a workshop.

I appreciate your aspirational goals but many here have and will continue to caution you against the failure within your first build. Seeing such a spectacular failure will do more to discourage you than any character string on the internet will.
I have already gotten the warning, several times. I know what I'm heading for.

Man, if I was daerek, I'd make the slamminest 7 string ERB anybody ever saw from start to finish right here in this thread. Guaranteed mikey would testify at that altar!
It has happened once before. Perhaps daerek will be able to do it again.
No guarantees, but I will try!

However, I have a tendency to jump into things, and so far the results of that have only been good....

DAEREK, in the spirit of encouragement, NOT discouragement.... that offer for that #2 pencil still stands. I'd love to see a sketch of your bass. I think you mention you've decided on the body...You don't need a workshop for that.... and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one on the edge of his/her seat, waiting with much anticipation.
It's like your on the edge of the pool.....and need a little encouragement to jump in... you said earlier "I have a tendency to jump into things", ummmmmm. You weren't "speaking with forked tongue", where you?
Hey, I have a 100 yard roll of 24" inch wide white paper that I gladly contribute 15 yards to your cause and the #2 pencil .... Holler if I can help in any other way.
peace
;)

1 BIG Plus on that, even if all you do is to draw out your design it will help you to see what your after. Another thing that might help is to buy some inexpensive wood from HD and see if someone you know has a jigsaw and a place you can do some cutting. A model to go off of is very helpful and you'll start to understand the correct steps you need to go in when you actually start your build.

:scowl: I have to admit, sometimes it looks as if some people like it more to talk about one's shortcomings, rather than ones achievements.
And afterall, this thread is called "Before the build ", if the dude would be drawing a sketch, it would be the end of this threat, cause he is actually in the process of building a bass. And we don't want that, do we?

:bassist::bassist::bassist:
Rock on dearek.
You'll get there...:bassist:

Yea I do....sh[DEL]o[/DEL]t or get off the pot.... even though this is a kewl thread... it's got; drama, anger, hilarity, suspense, bs, hypocrisy and much more..... and is as good as any reality show, BUT... it's stuck in the yakking stage.... I think we're criticized out..... lol we need new material ... there's plenty more to come... unless Dearek cancels it.... man, I can't wait to laugh at him when he glues his fingers together.... this is gonna be great... IF he'd just quit yakking about it.... lol pass the popcorn....episode II, "The Sketch" is gonna start.... I think, I hope....but first... a word from our [DEL]sponsors[/DEL]...critics....:p
;)

Daerek, just get a big ass sheet of paper, a mechanical pencil, a good white eraser, a 36" metal ruler, and start drawing - in full scale.

Draw a centreline, then a nut, then the bridge witness line. Then the 12th fret. From there, you can sketch to your hearts content. Start gathering your parts, or at least start deciding on what they will be and make a big list. Get dimensions for the parts and start adding them to your design.

As the planning unfolds, more and more specific questions will arise. These questions when posted here along with a picture of your design will get you real answers and less peanut-gallery comments.

Lastly, don't bother with the long multi-quote replies to all the banter you don't want to hear. Just ignore it and press on with your actual topic and progress questions.

Remember the old-yet-still-highly-offensive adage:

"Arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics: Even if you win, you're still ********... "

Beej, that's probably the best and most useful post in this thread. I'll try to find a big enough sheet and do just that. And I won't post any more questions here until I have done so and have made an in-depth study of Hiscock and Koch's books.

And that quote... :p

I'm just working on my first design or well, redesign right now and I started by tracing out the bass I'm reworking in full scale on paper. When I do eventually design my own bass from scratch, I'm probably going to use some tracings of other popular basses as well to compare dimensions. It just worked so well for me, so I second drawing it out fullsize.

Mikeyswood had a good diagram posted a while back that listed all of the parts of an instrument body and they talked about design in that thread too, there were some good posts. maybe he'll repost that one, I don't know how to find it.

I remember someone saying about keeping the bouts and the cutaways approximately the same width/depth relative to the centerline for esthetic balance. Since I read that, i've noticed that just about every guitar or bass I like seems to follow that rule.

anyway I agree that just working on it and ignoring the rest of it will bring you results. These guys might seem like a fragrant bouquet of dicks right now but I've been reading this forum for years and I've seen how much everyone does really come to help those in need.

I want to see your huge crazy bass come to life! :bassist:

 :crying: :bawl: :(
Daerek..... you didn't perchance take the "Evelyn Wood Speed Reading Course" did you? It's sure gonna be dull around here until....... wait  ...... your not coming back are you? It's all over....:bawl: you'll do anything not to actually build something.... it's you fear of being laughed at right? Man it's O.K. You should have heard me laugh at myself when I glued my fingers together.... I was really pessed ... but I was laughing my arse off too... please come back.... we'll be as nice as we can to young lad going through the rite of passage. After all, your gonna have to pass that way sooner or later... might as well be with your TalkBass Brethren.
