Recommendation for a bass for a guitar player. I have been looking at Squier Vintage Modified Cabronita Precision Bass, Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Bass and Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special Short Scale. Any suggestion is welcome, I haven't been able to try any of the bass mention above. Guitar center don't stock any of these. Thanks

Squier VM Jazz would be a good buy. Go full scale, give your fingers a workout, will help your guitar playing in the long run :)

See? I didn't even make a joke about a guitar# being on a bass forum.

Is there any reason the Squier VM Jazz is a better buy than either the Squier Vintage Modified Cabronita Precision Bass and Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Bass. Both Squier Vintage Modified Cabronita Precision Bass, Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Bass are on sale for $199 while the Squier VM Jazz is $299.

What is the difference between a Jazz Bass and P-Bass?
Jazz basses have slimmer necks opposed

You may want to check ratings on Google. Every VM or CV bass I have picked up has never disappointed me, they are beautiful stock and even better if upgraded. If you have a music store near you I would recommend playing around with them if they have them in stock. I haven't tried the telecaster bass. The precision and jazz basses rock! Always try before you buy if possible.

I only suggested the Jazz as the neck is slightly narrower for a guitarist, but really it's only a couple of mil, WOW those prices are CRAZY,get BOTH!

The VM Tele Bass is gorgeous,I'd get that, more mojo hehe

those go for $499 here I think
This is great advice here. Also many guitar players I know like the short scale basses. Common choices are the Squier Jaguar short scale or the Fender Mustang (there's also a squier mustang available)

Thanks everyone for all the advice, I think I am more confuse with more choice like now that I'm looking at a Jazz bass and I also see a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass '60. Hopefully I can find some to try.

Well, the representation that I use when differentiating a J and a P is that a J is a sword, because the sound cuts through It's a growly tone, while the P is like a Sledgehammer, the tone is round it has more punch than the J but it didn't have the growl, I personally prefer the J, It is very versatile in my opinion, you should also checkout Yamaha basses they are pretty great.

The VM series are all pretty good. Why did you pick those three models in particular? They're quite different from each other. What are you actually looking for in a bass? It's hard for us to make a recommendation if we don't know what you're after. If you don't know and just want a basic bass I'd say just get a precision (P).

Even if the local shops don't stock the particular models you want, I would still suggest trying out what they do have, so that you get a firmer sense of what you're looking for. Would you prefer a 30" scale or a 34"? Slim neck or fat and chunky? Active electronics or passive? Single-coils or humbuckers? Any decent shop should have at least a few models that will enable you to get a sense of what your preferences are.

I created a thread for this kind of thing a long time ago, but it's pretty buried now...
