Beginner bass nerd

Hey, I’ve been playing bass for 3 years and teaching myself from Chuck Rainey’s first book. I don’t have anyone to ask about pedals and effects. I’ve tried to educate myself with Juan Alderete’s website, but as I don’t know much about that side of things, I wasn’t sure where to start or what sound I’m after.

I figure experimenting is the way to go. So I was wondering if you could share what effects and pedals you recommend for a beginner? Or is that a tricky question to answer?

Also, do you know any drummers in Byron Bay that want to jam? I can’t find any. Just joking haha.

Also, with your fret hand, how can I stop fretting about not positioning it right? Do you have any tips or links? A bass teacher told me to just go with the flow, I’ll know if it’s the wrong way to hold my hand and alter it accordingly… I kinda think you only know it’s wrong after you develop wrist issues!

I think you need to start by watching some YouTube and listening to a vast array of records, then make a note of all the sounds that you hear that you think are cool. Once you have a small list of those things (artist/track/song section or timing) maybe post that in the Effects forum and you'll get lots of information on what types of pedals created them. Then, from there, you'll get brand/model recommendations as well. Experimenting IS the way to go, but first I'd recommend you follow what you find inspiring first, then you will easily find out what that effect is.

You need another bass teacher or a friend who can show you some proper technique and perhaps a few exercises. I wouldn't leave this sort of question to a discussion forum. Someone needs to work with you and show you, ideally.
