Ironically some of the most laughed at combos have pretty darn good preamps.

We don/t play shows,mostly just play after school, but I wanted an amp that could be loud enough to keep with the other instruments. I use a 4 string Dean Edge 09, but ordered a Sire v3 recently.

… where are you located? if you aren't moving it all around and just a young buck, there is a LOT of older/heavier gear around that will more than hang with your after school pals … there is no way I would spend anywhere near $1000 in your situation … $3-500 all day long should get you there … I wouldn't even think about new unless you are just somewhere remote where that is the only option …

If you are in the US? we can check Craigslist local for you too … I see requirements as loud, basic and built to last … something like an old Hartke 3500 and older, name brand 410 and you should be in the price range above … the least you spend that meets your objective at this point, you are money ahead … save your money for when you KNOW what you want down the road and don't need to ask advice on a message board …

Hi everyone, I am looking for a decent bass amp and cabinet. I was previously using a friend's hand-me-down Rumble 15. Recently the amp died on me and I wanted to get a new one.

I had my eye on the TC Electronic BH550 and the TC Electronic K-212 or K-410. I wanted to know if this is a good combination and if it is, should I go with the 212 or 410.


I play in a band with a drummer, guitarist (sometimes 2), and singer. We play hard rock, thrash metal for more background.

You'll be fine with either. I own a TC BH800 and 2 K212 cabs and that rig can get seriously loud and powerful sounding plus the TonePrints like SpectraComp and Drive or just SpectraComp really adds more life to it while the Chorus and Octaver TonePrints can be fun to play with.

The K212 is a smaller box and easier to carry, but since you are young it probably doesn't matter. The K410 should be punchier and a little more even while the K212 will be a little deeper in the lows and snappier in the highs.

While you could also shop used and find some really good gear by Genz Benz, GK and others, if you like the TC then just get it. It is definitely a very capable rig. I gig mine a lot and I own quite a few other very good amps as well.

As someone who has a vintage B15 (1969) and P bass(1973), I can say for a fact that for Thrash metal, it is NOT the "Sound". Serviceable, but there's a whole lot of bass amps that will do heavy stuff better.

You know I meant "the sound" as in like the studio bass player and not thrash metal right... Because thrash metal is certainly not vintage gear... I'm by no means recommending that combo but I also don't think anybody would be making a mistake by having that either.

I have a Fender v3 Rumble 500 head and a Rumble 500 4x10.. ( among other stuff ..Mesa WD-800 and SubD-800 +'s). The Rumble gear can handle the power needed and is under a grand (new with a warranty )... you can dial in a vintage tone or a gritty raunch..(at volume)

Can't go wrong with a markbass 210 or 410!

Don't give upon Fender. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] might be exactly what you need. I have three of this Rumble v3 series and believe I could not have spent my money any better (not much money spent, either). I think Guitar Center will ship it free to their store nearest you and you have the option of trying it. Check with them to confirm all this.

That rig is not new, the amp is 10 years old... If I sold that to a music store they would probably give me maybe $300 at best for the entire rig.. My advice is to look for used from a seller, not a music store because they mark them up big time.

i play a svt heritage 810 cab with a svt cl and it works great for metal. The two guitarists have marshall half stacks and i am easily able to sit in the mix. I play my bass strung BEAD.

Please, whatever you decide. Wear ear plugs when you're practicing with the band. Seriously. A medium loud drummer and couple of loud guitars would get my ear ringing as a kid in the garage.

And by the way, I used a 100 Watt 1x15 Fender combo which was fine. That costs $200-350 used today probably. Ran that amp at a performance this weekend still. (Caveat; I'm not playing thrash.)

We can spend $500 or $5000 of your money (trust me on this). I think a GK MB-500 (or 200) withwtheir 212 neo cab is the best bang for your buck amp.

As to number of strings, it depends upon the music you are playing. Don't go for a six unless you really need it - tougher and more expensive to find what you want.

I live in the Chicago area and paractice mainly at school or occasionally meet up and the drummers house.

I have the TC BQ500 head and it's a very nice head for $250.00 new. Finding a decent used cabinet with this should keep you under your price limit.

I rock a TC Electronic BH800 and a TC Electronic K-212. I couldn't be happier with them. I play everything from classic rock, country, to techno swing.

IMHO, Don't buy a TC amp for the toneprint technology. I find it very wonky and gimmicky. Your mileage may vary.

I would try to buy the Peavey 410tx cab separately for $100-$125, and pair it with the GK 700RB II amp. The old Peavey Cabs sound amazing for rock and metal! I might be a little biased though
