I tried two of those cheap Midi-USB cables and neither worked. M-Audio Midisport 1x1 worked fine.
Oh good! I just ordered one of those Midisports a couple of hours ago. I've had real good results with other M-Audio gear in the past.

How long ago was the internal battery replaced? When it starts failing it can cause a variety of symptoms. IIRC, it's a CR2032 lithium 3-volt "coin" battery.amp/cab sims are causing it and it's horrible, just horrible. i tried to fix the input gain level but it did not help
what output are you using, the XLR or the jack?
