Please trust me, though, that at even $169, the V-AMP is a killer, no-brainer

... and if not, just send it back for a full refund

I can't tell you how many $$$ I've wasted on musical gear that I've bought and sold over the past 25-years

Most well-wasted, and some I regret selling-off, but this V-AMP is a keeper

But don't just go by me, what do I know? :-)

I was interested in getting a multi-effects unit, but I didn't know which one. I was avoiding the ones that had new prices that seemed too low, but I couldn't afford the ones that were really high.

I'm not giving up on this one yet. I have fixed many things with perseverance, things that people said couldn't be fixed. But I knew this was a risk so I'm not too disappointed. Thanks for all the input. If I come up with a fix I'll let you know.

i havent used the bass version, but i had the guitar version for a while and that thing rocked. The direct out speaker emulation sounded very good direct to the PA. I recorded my whole album with that thing, and got nothing but compliments on the guitar tones. Bass can sound pretty good through the guitar version also.

Just a bump and a +1 for how good these things can be. Just as good as line6 pod from what I can tell. I no longer have it, but I used it heavily for about 3 years....never had a problem except the MIDI cable connection was a tight fit.

Check this out guys. I pulled the eprom to examine the the socket again and noticed this. I can't tell what the material is but if it's metallic this will be shorting these three legs of the eprom. I'm going to clear it and see what happens but I suspect that the eprom is probably toast and I'll have to have it reprogrammed. I wish I knew someone who has a burner that I could borrow so I wouldn't have to buy an eprom each time.

Well I removed it but still couldn't tell what it was. It was pretty flexible so it may not have been anything metallic. No change in operation. I did contact Behringer but I doubt they will be much help since I bought it used and with an issue but maybe something will come from it.

Just thought I would interject back to the beginning of this topic. I own and use the V-amp Pro for studio sessions and I used to use it live. I stopped using it after about 6 months because it seemed to kill the tone of my amp. Do not let this deter you however if you are interested in purchasing the unit. First off a word on quality. I have owned three behringer products in my life and all three are in perfect working order and have not been treated well. They are very rugged and dependable units. I'm not saying that your will be. The three products I have owned have performed flawlessly. Now back to tone. I think we are all in agreement that there is no processor or piece of modeling gear that will produce as good of a tone as its original piece. That being said, I play a GK 800RB and I am absolutely in love with its tone. I stopped using the behringer live because it muddied my amps tone. Now, I have used the V-amp with a power amp (a crown xls 402) and it sounded incredible. In the studio, it sounds incredible. So if you have an amp that has a signature sound that you love, you don't really need this, because it does muddy the tone a bit. I should say it changes the tone, not muddy. For me, it wasn't a bad tone, just not the tone i wanted, and there is an amp model for the 800RB but it just didn't sound right. So if your building a preamp/power amp rig or need a good DI for stage/studio, this is for you.

Thank you for your honesty BassMan, but what you described, the muddy, lifeless tone, is the common result of not configuring a modeling device to the gear you are hooking it up to:

I really shouldn't have said muddy. It wasn't so much muddy, but just different. I tried running it pre and post amp and bypassed and all. But like i said, if it were a simpler sounding amp or just a power amp, i love the sounds of this thing.

Did you set the V-AMP's operating mode correctly before you made your assessment? ;-)

(most people do not know to, or know how to, and that's where this thread comes in!)

New Head Phone Day! Audio-Technica ATH-D40fs. I cannot recommend them enough, the clarity is like angel's voices.

I practiced six songs to give the new 'phones a break-in.

Bass -> V-Amp -> Mixer -> Head Phones

L3 mode. This may sound strange, but I like the pure tone of my bass straight to my ears without an amp coloring it. The V-Amp for my use was a fancy pre-amp/EQ/Compressor. No effects.

The first thing that stunned me tonight was that the whole thing absolutely noiseless. :eek: Usually, there is something my house causing some hum...somewhere.

On Stand Up And Give Him Praise, I am going to experiment with the funk effect.

In all, this is possibly the best $75 I've spent for complimenting my bass. Well, second only to the tweed case.

L3 with the master gain at half (active bass). Flat live EQ and slight EQ shifts on the V-amp and the GK's EQ flat.

Caeman: As a DI this unit sounds wonderful especially if you can hook it up in stereo. But most soundmen don't want more than one channel per person.

Way to go on the L3 configuration, sorry that the V-AMP's not cutting it for you, but you're welcome back here anytime!

Good point on the stereo hook up, but I think since Chad "caeman" Wilson runs without effects, that both 1/4" and XLR outs would have exactly the same mono signal. I think the stereo chorus and other spatial effects would be the ones to take a hit from restrictive sound men.

Yeah, no reverb or chorus. Normally, I just use an EQ pedal. So my initial exploration and practice of the music is as a Pre-Amp and EQ, and experimenting with the Compressor, something I've never used before. Adding one layer at a time. At the Synagogue, there isn't much call for fancy effects from me.

I did try the stereo hookup to my mixer board, and it was very cool getting to hear the stereo FX. Maybe for a home recording project.
