Behringer Bass V-AMP Pro

Mention compressors to some bass players and they may joke at the thought of even using one. Others may say that they have one, but find it complicated to use or get the results they want since there are too many knobs and parameters to adjust.

Amp or preamp manufacturers may sometimes include a built-in compressor with their products. Unless it's an SWR Marcus Miller preamp or some other high-end product, there may be only one or two knobs to deal with. Manufacturers know that this makes life easier on bass players who just want to quickly and easily add compression to their bass tone and it also makes the unit more affordable as well.

I think the V-AMP's built-in compressor with it's 2 simple parameters does a fine job given the ridiculously low retail price of the whole unit. There's no reason someone couldn't add their own compressor stomp box or rack unit to the V-AMP, as it has 2 separate effect loops to do so.

One could buy a new V-AMP preamp, a 1000-watt power amp, and a sophisticated $300 rack mounted compressor and still come in under the price of a boutique, high-end preamp/amp that may still only have a few knobs for compression or perhaps even no amp or compression section at all. $$$
I don't doubt any of that for a second.

I use compressors heavily when I'm operating the sound board at my church. I love what they can do. They're really not all that complicated, only difficult thing is deciding how long to set the attack and release settings, and really that's up to your personal taste anyway.

Cool deal, KingRazor, and way to go on taking a chance on a Bass V-AMP!

Please be sure to post about your experiences here, after using it, if you wouldn't mind

Chad and I need to make sure that it's not only we who are nuts in loving this piece of bass gear

Cheers!

I'm going to wait to purchase it until I get my new bass. Got a lot of money going a lot of places right now. When I do get one I'll definitely post my opinions about it. Your guide will be helpful in de-crapifying it.

Well, I finally received my $10 unit. I replaced the EPROM with the new one I bought and it seemed to work for a few seconds then back to just the three lights on either side of the digital read out. Took the battery out and tested it and it's putting out 3V so that seems fine. What are the symptoms when the battery dies?

Thanks

Bummer! Sorry to say, this may not be the battery, but here is the link to the Battery Tip

It's worth a try, perhaps. Good luck!

You got it!

I ended up with a great quality box full of effects in a convenient, easy to carry package that provides me with all of the effects I needed for my bass playing, plus others that are fun to play with.

Plus, since it is a Behringer, it means I didn't pay an overly-inflated price for the same compute chips and board components that everyone uses that are produced in the same factory in China.

Thus, I have saved a ton of money.

Wait...was this a lame attempt at Behringer hate, JD?

no it is reality, no hate intended. I use an alembic f1x preamp and a carver pm 900 power amp all hand made in the usa. yes it cost alot more but I have never been sorry. If you dont want to spend a lot try the G.K line the 800rb is a great package built well, you can find a second hand one for around 300 bucks peace jd ps guitar center dropped the line because of quality and performance issues.

Are you actually comparing a cost-conscious effects unit, with a boutique hand-made system? Apples and oranges, dude. If you dislike that I own a Behringer product, feel free to buy me an Alembic and I will convert.

I never said that I dislike what you own, if it works for you great just my opinion sorry if I upset you. peace jd

You are being disengenuous, and you know it. Leave this thread alone to the people who actually own the product, or look beyond names and like to find something useful that doesn't fit the elitist or status quo.

Would you like to pick on the fact that I don't own a Fender bass? Do you find my GK amp acceptable and beyond insult? How about the fact that bought a Gretsch, instead of a Fender for guitar stuff? :eyebrow:

Some batteries may test fine under no load. Put it in the V-Amp and see what it measures in the circuit.

A question about the reverb unit.

In the manual, it talks about the 9 reverb modes (EDIT mode, press D). The counter starts at 5 and goes well beyond 9. What I am misunderstanding here?

The [D] button under EDIT mode controls the X-OVER section used for Bi-amping (which has nothing to do with REVERB)

Specifically, the values of 5 and greater as you described relate to the selected crossover frequency divided by a factor of 10

Please see previous Tip #15 for more details

Do a factory reset. That cleared up a lot of the 'mystery' problems my unit was having including bad battery symptoms.

Yeah I thought about this too, I'm gonna try it. I tried the factory reset but it won't even give me the CL while holding the D and E. It did once when I installed the new EPROM but that was it.

Oh, this is not good... but look on the bright side

Here in NYC a Big Mac Value Meal is $10

Last I heard, a used V-AMP is $75 on Craigs

Bite the bullet, and join us on this Crazy Train, for better or worse :-)

Cheers!

I spent about 30 minutes with the V-Amp. I was experimenting with all sorts of effects and stuff. I was running the box in Live3 mode. I ran the output to my Backline 210 amp.

I finished off the craziness with Drive in mode 3 (Pro Cat Rat?) and Flange. It was swoopy crazy, man.

So I guess you like this V-AMP thing after all, huh?

Not too bad for $75 and for trying something new that you may not have normally given a hoot about :-)
