Speaking of compressors, I've been experimenting with them lately on my church's soundboard.
This soundboard offers very fine tune control over the compressor. You have threshold, ratio, knee, attack, release, and output gain.
I have the attack generally set to what I believe is "slow" since I'm often dealing with vocals and this supposedly sounds more "natural". Release time is generally short.
With the ratio I like at least a 4:1 ratio because any less usually and it feels like the compressor isn't really doing anything.
Now, with a 4:1 ratio, the signal really gets squashed sometimes so you want to counter with raising the output gain to around 6 or more. (have to be careful though, last night I experienced feedback when I did this >_> )
I generally set the threshold lower and lower until it starts engaging any time the signal from one of the inputs starts to be above "normal".
Finally there's the knee control, I use a hard knee for peak limiting and a soft knee otherwise, on vocals I use a very soft knee.
