Naked Bass + Compression
Compression! Love it or hate it, but have you heard the V-AMP do it?
To really appreciate compression, your bass must go naked!
For today's class trip, I plan to take you a journey involving the often maligned, but greatly appreciated, compressor built-into the V-AMP.
First, create a patch for yourself, devoid of EFFECTS, DRIVE sims, COMPRESSOR, and above all, an AMPS model. By now, you know how to create a virgin patch using my "Quick Start Guide" document, but now we need to take it a step further by switching to PREAMP BYPASS. To bypass the AMPS section, press the TUNER + TAP buttons simultaneously just as featured in one of my previous thread Tips.
Once you do all of this, you should now have your naked bass signal coming out of your V-AMP. Crank up the VOLUME knob to make the most of the weak signal, then adjust MASTER knob accordingly. Yes, this is your naked bass. Get comfortable with this tone for a few minutes before proceeding so that your ears adjust to the reality that THIS signal is what the V-AMP has to work with.
OK, now it's compressor time.
Slowly bring up the COMPRESSOR knob from zero to 50%, playing all along the way. Nice, huh?
The compressor excels at taking a clean signal, like your naked bass, and it closes the gap between soft and loud portions to provide a smoother, more powerful sound. Under the TAP button, you'll find that the same COMPRESSOR knob controls the ATTACK of the compressor. I prefer zero attack, but you go ahead and find what ATTACK value suits you.
If you like what you hear then welcome to the world of Compression!
I myself use zero-to-little COMPRESSOR on AMP models saturated with GAIN and at-least-half on models using lower GAIN settings.
Cheers!
