Behringer BDI 21

What, a thread where I share my experiences with a certain brand? If it makes you feel better, I think the V-Tone amps sound great. The plastic potentiometer shafts mean you need to be a bit more careful with the amps that my lead guitarist is, and the plastic sleeve on the jack means that you need to not be stupid and knock your amp over face forward while still plugged in, like our keyboardist's son did, but honestly, treat the amps right and they last for years. My tuner, however, wasn't mistreated. It still tunes fine; I just had to relegate it to a home use tuner, because when it's in my effect loop, it sometimes cuts my volume. For the amount of gigging I do, I needed something a little stouter, so I got a Pitch Black. Of course, the stouter pedal came with a way stouter price tag.

I have the behringer and used it for a few band practices but for some reason I always end up going 'bass-->cord-->amp'. I also had a SABDDI for a while but couldnt really get it set properly. It never seemed like it was adding anything useful. So I sold it. I dug the BDI 21 out of a box the other day and will give it another shot. What I really need to do is make myself a bass pedalboard so its not a ton of work to plug in my tuner and BDI 21.

But anyways, I didnt give it a ton of effort but I think I liked the BDI 21 better than the SABDDI.

I've bought one a few months ago. I've taken it to some gigs and I know it's the best you can get with $ 30

Well, i have paid something around $ 65 and anyway it's worth the money.

PS: before you calling me stupid, I live in Brazil and here the prices are higher

Just a little question to the users of the Behringer V-Tone BDI21 - does anyone of you guys have an idea how to get close to the bass-sound in the link below with the BDI21?

The bass comes in at 1:04 minutes.

Buy a Sadowsky? Heh.

Seriously, tho, you'll need to scoop the mids out (try putting the blend knob at around 2:00), put the bass at around 3:00 and treble at 1:30, then add drive to taste. This is assuming your bass is fairly flat in response to begin with...

Many thanks for your response! Just tried the setting you recommended and ist really works quite well. Thanks a lot, mate! One thing I'm not quite sure about is the Presence-knob.

No problem, I actually try to use a similar sound when I need a hard-rock sound. Start with the presence knob at 12:00 and add/subtract it as your bass' tone allows - this knob is ultimately going to give you that high-frequency modern sound but you'll need to balance it with the additional fret/finger noise. Too much and it'll be a big, treble-y mess.

On that box think of presence as treble (hiss freq) and treble as very high mids. It's very good high and low...it's the mids that are lacking. Very nice solo sound though. I loved mine for a while until I needed mids to be heard in a loud band! I still own it because it isn't worth packing, advertising and shipping for $15.

how good/bad is the bypass? can i use it as a DI without having the preamp part on and is the DI transparent if the preamp is off? asking because i like my vt bass as my always on preamp this could act as a DI and could add some distortion when needed :)

IMHO, the bypass is quite good on my unit at least. I use mine primarily for studio recording via the XLR and I always get an excellent sound out of it, even when bypassed. I also carry it with me as a backup for live shows as my Zoom B9 has XLR sockets which are a bit touchy for some cable ends.

Bear in mind that it is a buffered circuit and not true bypass - I've noticed a slight signal level drop vs. removing it from the chain but without coloring the frequency noticeably.

Is this thing any good? All reviews say yes, but nobody wants to admit they just picked up some junk.

Thanks
The Abyss Bass
Abyss I have one and was using it for back up for my Sans Amp at the start, now I use it almost all the time only use the SA for larger gigs and it saves on the wear and tear. For $30.00 you can't beat the sound it is very close to the SA less horsepower but, still a most in your gig bag I have 2 as long as you do not play rough with them they work great I was happily surprised worth it, buy it today you will not be sorry!

That's a fairly ignorant comment about this specific piece of kit. If you don't know about it, please do not respond about it. You may not like the sound, OK. Or maybe you do. But this is not a Behringer-bashing forum. OP specifically asks (and others learn) about this specific pedal. Based on your advice to look at the Presonus, and the ART, you obviously haven't even looked up what this pedal does.

I would avoid Behringer at all costs. I hear nothing but bad news about their junk. Its all disposable reverse engineered junk. Pay a little more and get an Art Tube Pre or Presonus

+1. I've owned several pieces of Sansamp gear and the BDI21 is my secret weapon for almost everything. I've owned mine for several years without issue.
