Behringer XR18 X-Air

I see two big hurdles with your proposed "linking" of two. First is control. Worst case, you have to control each with its own dedicated surface. That's not a huge deal. Tablets are cheap. The biggest issue is the fact that you'll now have, potentially, several monitor mixes available, but the ones driven by the first mixer can only have that mixer's inputs in them, while the ones driven by the second can have the second mixer's channels, plus the combined "submix" input. Let me clarify. For the sake of this example, we're going to use mixer A for all the instrument inputs. Drums, bass, gtrs, Keys, horns, what have you. So, we mix all that down to "band, stereo", into mixer B. This one handles all the vocals for the music portion of the worship service, as well as the spoken word mic inputs. Great right? Yep. Now, the drummer's monitor mix needs him in it, as well as bass and keys. No electric gtr(he's too loud on stage), but a fair amount of acoustic, AND he'd like to hear the lead vocal stuff, the choir, and all the spoken word. That's gonna be your issue. If you drive all the monitors from the second, "master" mixer, you can't control individual channels from the slave mixer in the monitors. That reason alone MIGHT be enough to justify waiting for a single mixer that will do it all.

Thank you!!! That is a good point that I did not consider however I do understand that as we have the same issue already. We are currently using using two JamHubs for personal monitor mixes. So we have been dealing with that issue. Because of the JamHub (though I would love to get rid of it) I did not give to much though to the aux outs. But now you have the wheels in my feeble little brain turning... All vocoals are in one JamHub. We could possible eliminate it and use one aux out. hmmmm... Again thank you for your response. Though i don't think that the aux's present a problem for us, your comments have caused me to think of other options other than just the output to the mains. PS: I did not overlook you comments about the two different control surfaces. That is more of my concern. Also in discussing this locally, we have considered what happens if the wi-fi is down. My thinking is to create a down and dirty private network with two laptops and the two XR16s.

It seems to me that the most logical use for a sub-mixer would be to accommodate a very large drum kit with lots of toms and aux percussion. Generally speaking, a boatload of toms (timbale, octabans, bongos, etc.) can be considered as a stereo pair grouping. You either want to hear that grouping in a monitor mix, or you don't. Nobody usually asks for more Rack tom #2, but less of floor tom #1, am I right. Of course, I would assume that the key components of the drum kit, if mic'd, would need to remain with the Main Mixer (kick, snare, HiHat/OH mic, sample or loop triggers, etc.).

Otherwise, I think it is far better to have all 32 channels in a single mixer (X32 with expansion module in the Behringer realm), or the Mackie or Presonus 32 input rack mixers. I just don't see a great benefit to the convoluted things you'd need to concoct to make this all work, other than the above mentioned dedicated drummer's toms/aux percussion submix.

I totally agree with all your comments and in a perfect world with the proper funding I would totally be looking at the products you mentioned. The problem I have is i need it yesterday and have a budget of $0. A slight exaggeration, but I'm sure you get what I'm saying.. I'm in TX in the month of May we received more rain the we did in all of 2014 and part of 2013 combined. Anyway, the church flooded out. We have started restoration and I need to through together as cheaply as possible a traveling system we can set up and tear down every week at a school for the next three months. Fir this we will use only 1 xr16 and simply not mic all of the instruments. We are using an REALLY nice Roland Digital Drum set and will have the drum brain control the individual drum levels and give me a single output to the main board. The ideas I am considering are for when we move back into our church and trying to overcome other problems created by years of poor planning. If I had $5K I will be able to replace everything with a perfect set up. it;s a small country church trying to go more contemporary to bring in new blood but because of it's size both in congregation and in sq ft, $5K would go a long way. Right now i was given a budget of $700.00 max which is not even close to make this happen and still provide the same quality of worship service every week remotely for the next 3 months which will probably stretch to 5. So again I totally agree with you but I'm kind of stuck. Plus what ever we buy I have to migrate back into use in the church when we move back in.
 
Could anybody point me to a link or video that shows me how to have my ipads running via my external mac router and my laptop plugged in via ethernet cable at the same time?

I don't know of any video, but it's a simple hookup.
Assign the IP you want to the XR (eg: 192.168.1.10)
Plug a CAT5 cable into the RJ45 (REMOTE) jack on back of XR, connect the other end to the router. Set up the router as a stand-alone system but make sure DHCP is on. Configure the wireless network name (SSID), security type (preferably WPA2 personal at a minimum), password, etc. Make sure it is set to broadcast the SSID or the next step will fail.
On your iPad under settings..wireless, search for and select the SSID of the router. Enter the password. Make sure you connect.
Now go to the XR app and connect to the IP assigned above.
Now, with a 2nd CAT5 connect the PC to one of the ports on the back of the router. Open the XR app and connect to the IP assigned above.
You should be all set..

I have that partially done. I am using a mac air router which I believe is set up for DHCP but will have to check. I plug it into the ethernet port on the X18 and set the switch to wifi client. I ipads see the X18 fine but when I plug my laptop into the second port in my mac router it doesn't get an ip.

Sounds like DHCP is not turned on...
 
as in amazing! I'm standing at the tram station this morning and thinking how i'm gonna mess around with it today and "oh, i need extra EQ rack unit for FHO downmix" and then i'm like "nope, i have it on xr18". every thing i think i need i have it on this baby. one thing concerns me, it produces a lot of heat. is that normal or? i'm planing on instaling rack cooler when i get the rack... should be arriving any day now. aaaany day now... when i'm all set up, i'll post pics of it. we have electric drums + line6 fx100 for guitar and line6 x3 live for bass. everything goes into xr18 and then into HA 8000 headphone preamp system that feeds signal into shure 215 IEMs. we have a bit of white noise , but that's just because of IMHO levels that aren't set up properly.
it's so fun to jump from ampeg svt sim to eden to aguilar on line6 and IMO line6 does a good job of simulating amps and so does line6 fx100. also from checking out signals, i've seen that xr18 is noiseless.

No you can not, its either wifi or ethernet, not both. This is why I got a separate router for my setup. I just don't trust wifi enough to be completely dependent on it. I hard wire my laptop to the router, USB the for music between sets. Then tablet on wifi.
