Bergantino AE212 - Just Released

The AE212 is a keeper! The gig went excellent last night at the Christmas party we played for. Some sort of dance club and man do they like to dance. Everything from slow country to rock and roll and in between.

Didn't know this would set off such a discussion on "break in". The cab just sounded good all night long. I am not a frequency guru or cabinet spec junkie. All I know is I like what I hear. The sound out of this thing with a ShuttleMax 12 driving it is just pure bass like I like it. My back is feeling better already.

Cool! And again, on the 'break-in' thing, anything you were going to really notice was mostly finished happening by around the 3rd tune, so again, kind of a non issue.

Great cab, and as with all the AE cabs, a great match with the Shuttle heads, especially the Max models!

I don't know anything about break-in, but I can tell you that I am running two of these cabinets, and I had played the first one for several hours before I got the second one. The first time I played the two together, I did notice a slight difference from one to the other, but after an hour they were identical and perfect. (Not that there was ever any question about their perfection, they sounded great right from the start. They just got better after a couple of hours. Maybe they needed to get aquainted...)

Yes... it is not safe to try one unless you can afford to buy it. The resulting GAS attack could prove lethal. Also it's not safe for other cabs to be around the AE212, they will become jealous at the lost playing time and attempt to cause harm. As well, your bass player friends may become a little envious and pull the "you distract him, I'll hit him, we'll both grab the cab" routine.

Yessir, these AE212 cabs are risky business.

I just got my new AE212 and ruining it with a MarkBass Little tube 800. It sounds good however I have notice something’s that makes me missed my old HT bergs. I notice that the voice gets more noticeable (HiFi) at higher volumes. I hear the bass sound coming from the rear port not from the front of the cab, and last I have notice that at really low volumes the B string just don't sustain the sound. I wonder if I got the right cab. I was looking for that deep low end not HiFi cab. It didn't care about the weight.

This is very true. Right now, my D-210XST is serving as a speaker stand for my AE212 in my practice room. Once in a while, I run them in series just so the Eden doesn't feel left out.

It's totally not safe, even for listeners at your gig. Look what it did to this poor fellow when he heard his first Berg.

Any sound coming out of the port is omnidirectional... so zero issue there. The AE's sound MUCH different than the older HT's, and have very little in common with them. Much tighter, much brighter and more organic in the upper mids, much punchier, actually, much 'less' hi fi to me, if you are using hi fi as most do on TB (i.e., to describe a cab with big low end, sizzly highs, and a dip in the mids).

If you want that more smooth, hi fi type tone of the older HT's, the HT112ER stack would be the thing (especially if you don't care about weight).

However, I would suggest you try the cab with a different head prior to making a final decision. The LMT800 has quite a different voicing than the other Markbass heads (very upper mid present, deep low end, a bit of a hole in the low mids), and that might not be the best match-up with the AE212. It sounded darn nice with the punchier, tighter AE410, but still not as even as the other MB heads (F1, F500, LMIII, etc.).

Geez I hope not!!! you mean "running it", yes? ;)

I have to agree with Ken here - the MarkBass Little Tube 800 is likely not the best match for this cab, and unless you are really tied to that head you should at least try something else. I have a few HT112 cabs sitting around the house, and that's exactly what they've been doing since the AE212 arrived - sitting. The AE212 is so good for so many things that I can't be bothered to lug the HT112 cabs anymore.

The AE212 is not generally picky about heads, but this is one of the few cases where you might want to look elsewhere - Genz Shuttle 9.0, Genz GBE series (heavy, but they can be had pretty inexpensively), Markbass F1, F500, maybe the MoMark stuff, TecAmp, lots of things that will match the AE212 a bit better.

Also, I don't mean to knock your current head - it's good - it just may not be a good fit.

I should had make it more specific I had HT210 & HT115 they were great I just need it a single cab not two. Don't get me wrong I like the AE 212 but I think that either AE and HS 410 may bring a little bit of the low end/ low mids sound but this is coming out of the reviews I had read, I never experience neither cab.

In addition to the Shuttle 9.0, you might want to also consider the Markbass F500 or the GK MB500 or MB Fusion, if you want to stay in the lightweight category. If you're wiling to go a bit heavier, the Mesa/Boogie M6 is really, really nice with the AE410 (and HS410).

The AE212 has more inherent low end (i.e., deep bass) than either the AE410 or the HS410. The AE410 will be MUCH brighter in the upper mids than the AE212, and punchier down low. The HS410 will have more low mid kick, and a much smoother top end.

None of these cabs sound much like the HT210 or HT115 to my ear... totally different mid response, totally different top end.

Again, the closest thing in the current Bergantino line to the old HT's is the new HT112ER. If you need a one cab solution, the AE212 is probably the closest you are going to get.

Otto, I know this isn't apples to apples but how does the DNS-112N voicing compare to the AE212 in terms of smoothness, punch, low end extension, and mid voicing if the amp is adjusted to make volume levels equal? Are these two cabs better suited for different styles of music? Thx...

Just an aside here. The more I play my Shuttle 9.0/AE212 rig the more I'm wondering where this tone has been all my life. With apologies to the OP in the "What's the big deal about setting amps flat?" thread, this rig, when set flat with nothing boosted sounds fantastic. Bumping up the mids and bass just a touch gives it that little extra push over the cliff.

I've been playing my '94 Fender American Jazz Deluxe Plus and my Fodera Emperor Deluxe through the rig, and they both just ooze tone ... rich bottom, full but unobtrusive mids, and crisp, clear highs. What I really like is that the bass boost button doesn't boom like the Eden WTX-500. It just makes it a little fuller.

If I can get the volume I need, this is my tone. We'll see at my next gig.

+1 I roll in just a smidge of upper mids with my Markbass F500, and it is about as good as it gets for me too. Great cab!
