Bergantino NXV112 Is it enough?

If you’re used to a 2x12, the single 12 will leave you wanting more, I think. The current Berg 2x12 is pretty light. I know it’s more money (they’re not cheap) but if you can get one, will it be lighter than your current cab?
Is it possible to get Barefaced cabs in Oz? My super compact could probably handle a medium rock gig on it’s own, better than the Bergs I’ve tried.
It really boils down to how loud the drummer is, and what the room is actually like at your smaller gigs (the ones with no FOH).
A 2000 square foot room with a wooden floor and a 7 foot ceiling? No problem.
A 3000 square foot room with a concrete floor and 12 foot ceilings (like a brewery)? Maybe not. I don’t like to play rock gigs with a single twelve, it’s hard to cut through but still get depth to the sound, without more speaker area. But… I play with some fairly loud drummers. YMMV
I've looked at Barefaced online but they are so expensive. I don't think there is a distributor here in Australia. I'd be looking at around $1,800 before shipping with the current exchange rate.

Ouch. I lucked out- a friend of mine was getting rid of a pair so I dug deep, but I won’t be buying any gear for awhile.
I love the Berg stuff but I wonder if a GK 212 might be better for your needs? Again, they definitely sound different and I don’t know about availability, but it might be another brand to consider.

Sometimes you get lucky hey. I spoke to a guy recently who got a pair of Markbass 2x10s for $400. Not each, that was for both of them. Damn! I need some of that kind of luck.

Probably yes since you say you are "not very loud" whenever there is no FOH support. I own two 1x12" Berg cabs: one HDN112 and one NXT112, both 8 ohms. I've played in small bars (max 30 people) with just one of them with an Aguilar TH500. If the drummer was loud I needed to push the cab close to its limits, but it wasn't farting out. One thing I find crucial in such situations is to set the amp close to ear level, e.g., on a dedicated stand or even a stable bar stool.

On top of my bergs, I’ve also got a pair of barefaced BB3’s and a pair of super mini t’s. All bought direct from barefaced. Not only do you need to pay on top for freight, but customs will hit you with GST on landed cost. So your 1800 is getting well into the 2’s.

It all depends on your tone expectations - the barefaced/berg are flat response full range, and very detailed. The markbass ( I also have 2 traveller 102’s ) are heavily voiced and not very detailed. If you like a bit of snap or grit, the markbass may be too vintage for you. If you like vintage, then all good. Given you were looking at the nxv, you may be sweet.

Pity you’re so far away you could try mine, but I’m on Phillip Island in vic.

Cheers

That's a kind offer - thanks and the information on the cabinet differences is very helpful. There's not that much difference in price between the Markbass MB58R 2x10 and the NXV210. The Bergantino is looking like the way to go. There's a dealer in Sydney where I can try one out.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm starting to think a 2x10 might be a better option if I can get one at the right price. I've heard a Markbass 2x10 at one of the venues we play in with a similar band as ours and it sounded decent. They're a little more expensive but still small and light and at least I know what it would sound like.
Per my earlier post, I usually use a GK Neo IV 2x12 because to me it's the ideal loudness/weight/size combination. I have a 1x12 I almost never grab as a result. That said I just last night played a backline with the 2x10 version of my cab (with a TH500--not my favorite amp but they're in tons of backline so I'm used to them). The cab sounded great. The 2x10 had plenty of umph and clarity and held up in a loud-ish rock trio no prob onstage. I'd actually never used a 2x10 standalone before in all my years (I don't like 4x10s as a rule so I always leaned towards 12"s). Pretty impressed with the 2x10 config on its own.

The price you quoted matches BGD in Sydney, so I’m assuming that’s your supplier.

If you’re in Sydney like your profile says, you can organise with George to visit his premises in belmore and try gear out.

Fwiw, I have nxt112’s ( basically nxv’s with a tweeter ) and a single cab is plenty loud for a smallish indoor venue at sensible volumes.

Cheers
Agree 1000%. George is great and will have a host of other cabs to A/B test. FWIW a 1x12 should be enough fior small gigs. My TH500 is loud enough through a GR 1x12 (sourced from BGD).

In Australia this little bundle of noise facilitation will cost around $1,220 plus shipping. At that price it's a gamble because I can't try one out and would have to order online. It would be very helpful to get some advice from those who know. I'm in a small old school soul/blues/R&B band - drums, guitar, vocalist and me on 5 string FSO. We're not very loud and play small venues such as pubs and small clubs. In larger venues there is usually FOH support.

At the moment I'm using a Rumble 500 watt head into a custom built 4 ohm 2 x 12 sealed cabinet. At my age I'd like to go a bit smaller if possible and run a 1 x 12 8 ohm cabinet that would bring the Rumble output back to around 350 watts.

The NXV112 should handle it but will it be enough for small gigs by itself?

Hey mate,

Give George at Bass Gear Direct a call, he can usually do a discount if you ask nicely.

I’m using an NXV212, but I have tried the 112 and 210 cabs. If you’re doing really small gigs, the 112 will be ok, but I think the 210 will carry a room better. It’s also only $300 more than the 112.

just to play devils advocate… I wouldn’t rule out a good old Fender Rumble cab if you’re on a budget. The 2x10 is a solid cab for the money and will pair with your rumble head nicely.

We just had a gig for New Year’s and I just used a Hartke HD210 and Tech 21 head and it was pumping!

I usually use a 212 and Berg head, but downsized for this gig.

Pushing the cab sounded really awesome with good clarity and low end. Maybe 200-250 watts.

I rarely push the head/cab in my studio hard, but responsive once I did.

The 210 is a great stand alone cab.

Thanks for the tip. I did eventually call George and I ended up with a Genzler 2x10 Bass Array. I couldn't get an NXV - apparently they're no longer made and the new NXT was just a little out of my budget - over $2,200.

It's plenty. I have two of the original Berg HT112 cabs (as seen in my avatar). The NXV112 has similar specs as far as power handling and efficiency, so you will get similar volume levels.

I play mostly in bands like yours and currently use just one of the cabs unless playing outdoors. Currently I use a TC Electronic BH250 head which is rated for 250 watts RMS at 4 ohms. There is no 8 ohm spec, but I'd guess 125-150 watts tops but I have yet to need to run it wide open on a gig. All of the Berg 112 cabs are rated for 300-400 watts at 8 ohms dependening on the exact model so you can run a higher wattage amp than I’m using right now.

P.S. the Bergantino website says the NXV112 is no longer in production so if you have a local dealer with one in stock, buy it now.

I eventually got a Genzler 2x10 Bass Array. It sounds great but I haven't had a chance to gig with it yet. It's small and light enough and at 8 ohms will get around 350 watts out of my Rumble 500 watt head. More than I'm likely to need. It's pricey stuff but out here in the antipodes we just have to suck it up I guess. Unfavourable exchange rate and high shipping costs are the reality.
